Which is better value, etc

Looking to purchase either anquet or memory map (or similar) to use in conjunction with my etrex legend.

Which is the better buy?

Tracklogs!

Sort of depends exactly what features you require. Orange Alex did a comparison of all 3 for OM some time ago..
was looking to be able to plan routes on my pc and then upload them to my GPS and walk them

Unfortuanetly Anquet isn't available free through emule along with all the UK maps.

I've used MM and Anquet and find the latter loads better.
Do a search on this and other forums to see some of the problems people have encountered using MM.

mm! nnoooooooooooooooo.

take a look at tracklogs (www.tracklogs.co.uk)
can't speak for anquet as haven't used it but, so i hear, it has strange registration problems which means you can't transfer it from one computer to another without a great deal of hassle.

Tracklogs. Nice people to deal with. Easy to use prog. Can be used on two computers. Good package.

Yet another vote here for Tracklogs. I've tried all three, and each has some strengths, but overall I feel tracklogs is by far the best. It is intuitive, has up-to-date maps (incl. CRoW markings) and basically just does the job with minimum fuss.

tracklogs also has an excellent printing function.

erm.....this looks like this is turning into a tracklogs thread!

unlike the rabid p***** mob, our enthusiasm is based on it just...well....being the best!

I use Anquet and find it easy to use. I have it on my pc at home and also a laptop. To be able to install it to my laptop took only one email to Anquet, who were really helpful

Another vote for Anquet.

Any comparative tests seem to rate Anquet and MM as the best of the bunch. Once down to these two, you might want to consider whether or not you want to plan routes on a PDA or want to use postcodes ( both MM only).

Also - I suggest downloading a demo. The two work quite differently, and the Anquet Path/Route system is easily the better of the two.

As for "registration" problems, this is down to Anquet actually applying an anti-piracy system which all the companies are obliged to do under the terms of their contract with the Ordnance Survey. The fact that Anquet one works and the MM one doesn't may indicate the relative skills of the programmers.

I use Memory Map and have found it easy to use. I got it with my Garmin 301 and for planning routes and downloading. I've got 1:25k of Snowdonia and 1:50k of Lakes.

I've never seen Tracklogs or Anquet so I can't draw comparisons. There's enough MM discontent on this tread ond others on the forum to suggest I've backed a loser. So, what aspects of which features does it fall behind the others? For example, how exactly is Anquet's Path/Route systems "easily the better".

No doubt all the progs have their fans. Sometime ago Parky highlighted the difficulties he had experienced getting MM to work with his GPS (do a search and you will find more than sufficient opinions on this subject). It sounded like a nightmare and made me very thankful I followed his (and others) advice to get tracklogs. I recall comparative tests of the three progs and seem to recall Tracklogs was favoured by some reviewers over the rest. I also seem to recall that Tracklogs was used by a Welsh MRT. If it is good enough for MRT's it is certainly good enough for me. My tracklogs and GPS (Etrex Legend C) work seamlessly together. Tracklogs appear genuinely interested in working with users to improve functionality and ease of use (see their site for details). Demo samples can be downloaded from tracklogs and other suppliers for you to play with. Have a go.

Anquet wins hands down for me.

tried memory map and somehow the interface between PC and GPS just doesn't work - sometimes not recognised and always tries to initiate active GPS

Anquet simple to use and good back up service

i think the consensus could be....anything but mm.

I'm very happy with MM, but I use a PDA based GPS that lets me see the actual OS map with my position on it. So no it's not just a case of "anything but MM". I think the choice of software depends partially on the device you want to use it with.

As they all have trial versions freely available then surely the answer to anyone looking for the best choice for them is to try them all and come to a decision on what suits them.

After some initial problems with connecting my GPS to the PC and having MM recognise it was there, I've had no problems with it. It's great, and I love it.

Another happy MM user her, but then I've never used Tracklogs or Anquet so I may just be happy by default. It works fine with a Garmin Geko 301 for me as well. I don't really use it to put paths/routes in so thats not an issue for me. I just put in a few waypoints in case I quickly need to find a path junction etc. in the murk and then download the trakc afterwrds to see where I actually went etc.

tracklogs. i've used an old version of anquet ,and although it makes planning very easy it would only transfer a route and not a track. it was just personal preference. i prefer to follow the line of a track on screen (when cycling)rather than navigate following the arrow and waypoints.newer anquet may be differant, others can advise on that.i use my gps and maps for cycling as well so a limit of 50 waypoints on a route is very limiting, a tracklog covers far more distance in far more detail. i have some memeory map(7&8) but only download to that for all the walk/ride info it offers. didn't like it for planning because the route profile would not span 2 adjacent maps(on the legal version at least), so wasn't much good for cycling. anquet and tracklogs will give a pfofile antwhere on the map over any distance.
