Hi all - I do a fair amount of walking, and having burnt my head a number of times, I am in need of a hat. I don't get on with baseball caps at all (they look crap and make me feel like a twelve year old), but quite like the look of a Tilley hat. Who else does a brimmed hat of a similar nature ?

I am a follically challenged 37 year old, who despite my advanced years, still has some shreds of dignity intact !

Thanks all - Paul.

I'm a year behind you, in years and maybe 2/3 years behind you hair wise.
I wear a wide brimmed denim cowboy type hat which I soak in water to keep me cool, £1.99 out of H+M.
Best thing ever.

Hats are sooo last year - get a Buff!

I wore a buff up Penyghent a month ago, received wierd looks from everyone I bumped into (It was over my eyes though ;-) )

Probably because it was my 12 year old daughters - very pink / lavender.

No I really fancy a hat.

Get a Tilley. Worth every penny and you can use them come rain or shine.
I've also got 2 Buffs but they're no good to protect you from rain or the back of your neck from the sun.

Paul, loads of places do Tilley-copies. I've got a real Tilley and it's great, although it was pricey.
My Favorite is a leather cowboy hat I got in Greece. No good for walking but great for hanging around the tent.

A real Tilley Hat has plenty of advantages over the copy-cats. Never mind the price, coz they stand by their lifetime guarantee, and if you wear one out, you get another to replace it. There you go - I got mine on my head already! >>>>>

Another vote for a buff here too

Get a Buff, because you can do so many things with them, a tilley hat, is err just a hat!

Another vote for a buff, factor 30 and a scarf or collar will sort your neck out. I can see how Tilley hats are practical and hardwearing but I just can't bring myself to wear one. No offence to anyone who does wear one but they just seem a bit red socks and knapsack to me. My wife takes the piss out of me for wearing a buff, god knows what she'd say if I wore a Tilley hat.

I use TNF's Brimmer hat. Does the job and you can wet it for really hot days.

Buff? Is it pertex?

Buffs are microfibre

I got a Buff as well. I might have got one earlier, but the UK price is seriously steep. Do you know these things only cost €8 in Spain - which is about £5.50. We're paying about twice that price in the UK.

yep, a vote for tilley here.

i may well have this wrong....but... a buff just sits on your head so your head is touching the sun baked fabric rather than your head being nice and airy and shaded inside a hat.
doesn't keep the sun out of your eyes and off your neck either.

Bush hat from the local market
Cheap - a couple of quid
Packs small – scrunches up in the top of my backpack
Easy to replace – no big deal if I loose it
Oven glove – good for holding hot pans etc ;-)

I have a Tilley which I use when fly-fishing, to protect eyes(glasses too), head and ears. Have to go with the others on the Buff though, they are simply amazing. I have long hair which I curl up in a Buff, bingo - short haired person! Can't agree with head buff not being as airy as a hat, air heats up too! They are seriously expensive here, for what they are, but you may never take it off. There is also a polar Buff for colder climes.

What about a hankie tied in all four corners???

I'll get my hat....

I would say go for a wide brimmed hat i have a nice leather bush hat which does the job very nicely so it keeps the sun off and is waterproof and so keeps the rain off too.

But i do have a buff but i only use it on the odd occasions usally when the windchill is frezeing my face. or as a neck gaiter.
