Almost but not quite.....You catch on quickly.
When I was a nipper and anyone was, let us say, not mainstream and I manifested my curiosity by staring or pointedly asking questions, my old mum would say "wisht, he's special". As teenagers are wont to do my sister and I took an everyday family euphemism distorted it and came to use it for any old anorak and it caught on with our friends.
So "special" means different from the rest of us in whatever way.
