Alpkit Filo down jacket

Alpkit Does It Again
Those nice fellas over at Alpkit have added a new down jacket to their portfolio of high-performing but affordable gear, available now in any colour just as long as it's black :-)

I seem to remember you saying it took the two of you a while to get it together! :)

My own Alpkit jacket just arrived today and I must say it seems like a great buy. i got the large but have been cutting back on doughnuts and so it fits very well, much better than the RAB but that was XL, and it's got a much better collar as well.

I had a slight regret after placing the order when I saw the Macpac Sundowner jacket reduced from £150 to £75 in the Snow and Rock sale but now I've got it I'm very happy indeed. Just need some cold weather now.

Thinking about getting an Alpkit Filo down jacket, but a bit concerned about ordering from the internet without being able to try it on first.

So what are the sizes like? i.e. how do they compare to other brands. The kind of comments I'm after are: "well I'm normally a large, but found the Alpkit large was a bit small" etc. etc.

Does that make sense?

Also, now that some people may have had them a while, do you still love them, or have you become disappointed over time?

Cheers!

Bob still loves his to bits and I've got one now, too! The good thing is that they are such a good price that I'll wear it lots and not get all 'precious' about it because it cost (say) £150....

I asked Jim about the measurements and he said to use the dimensions on their website by getting a jacket which fits you well (with room for layers underneath) and spreading it on the floor and getting the tape measure out. I did this and the size that came is perfect.

Hope this helps.

Cracking idea JJ. Will try it tonight!

Glad you still like 'em!

P.S. Why don't I think of doing things like that???

Neither did I - Jim made me do it officer!!

Now I'm (just about) back on-line I thought I'd drop in an update...

I love my Filo!! Warmth, comfort, fit are all superb. Other than the lack of the DWR on the Endurance I'd rate it even better than the Rab down jackets. I prefer the shorter back length as it allows better movement, the fleece lined collar is the best I think I've ever come across on any jacket, the pockets are practical ... oh, and it looks good too :)

Only slight down side is the odd bit of down does escape at the seams, but not enough to worry about yet.

If someone gave me the choice of the Filo, a Rab, a TNF Numpty or a Lafuma for nothing, I'd take the Filo. And at this price it's an absolute bargain.

Is it just mine or is the zip puller on the "wrong" side?

Lands End do a down jacket with snap off hood for £69.

Kev, you're right. It's a girly-sided zip!

how does it compare with TNF Nuptse?

...but bearing in mind the TNF Nupste is more than twice the price!

No idea how that got posted twice.

Some people (well, OK, me) have a very limited budget - I can't afford £140-ish for a down jacket!

"how does it compare with TNF Nuptse?"

- well it looks less chav-like for a start
lol

Have to say that I'm quietly considering one of these at the moment.

As for those who want it proofed. Nikwax Down Proof will do the job nicely and you should wash it in Nikwax Down Wash.

Just got one of these for my girlfriend. Very impressed. Seemed this at first when unpacked, but once the down had fluffed up - its huge!

One excellent feature is the 1cm strip of webbing on the internal zip baffle. It stops the zip snagging on the soft material. I tried on a Rab in Outside today and the zip snagged staright away.

Great. I can get one now and it'll have cost me less for 2 filos than for one Rab and the down is just as good!

Fab aren't they. Wore mine tonight to go to the wall and it kept me nice and toasty in this cold weather!

Id be really tempted to get one myself as I do feel the cold but I know the Mountain Hardwear sub-zero jacket fits me really nicely and I can get it for a similar price to the Filo.

I got one for Christmas, so far it's only been tested at Tesco and the park but I love it. It certainly did a good job of keeping me warm while standing around in the park yesterday while the offspring were playing.

Has anyone tried treating one with Nikwax downproof ? If so is it easy to do and is it any good ? Or it be better to just spray the outer with TX direct ?
