There are many questions over Chief Seattle's speech. It may not even have existed.

It would still be interested to know where "take only photographs" came from.
Chris, does it have to be "photographs" or does "pictures" count?
"Picture" would be on the way to "photographs". I guess every version of the saying counts.
Then the question remains is it an updated version of lines 9 & 10 in the quote I found, or are they based on the one we discussed. As they seem too similar not to be related in some way.
I would guess it is an updated version of lines 9 & 10 unless there is an earlier version and lines 9 & 10 are an update or variation.
So at the moment we know it was around in some form in 1933, but suspect it was around earlier maybe 1920's. But no proof of it being used earlier yet. And that walkers, climbers, backpackers and cavers have been using it for years.

That's the current state of play. I'm away for a week. I'll be interested to see if the search has progressed any further when I return.
I may send it into the that great unbiased newspaper the Daily Express as they have a daily section where this sort of question gets put to the readers.
oh and have a good trip

Thanks.Nothing outdoors unfortunately. Three day gear trade show in Harrogate and a one day outdoor clothing conference in Penrith.
 Go Outdoors Chris?
Of course, Dave. For the umpteenth time. And the last, at least at this time of year. From 2006 it will be called Outdoor Preview and will be in July. But still in Harrogate.

Sierra Club Information replied with a friendly email but can't help. I'll see if I can think of anyone else to ask when I get back from Go Outdoors.

I have a celtic miscellany dated 1823 of which I had to cut some of the pages. This is purported to be a translation of an old Highland saying.
Whither ye gang tak nae thing nae gi'en an' mind o, the place. Leave fair words o'thanks for succour and sooth, An' as ye move on mark lightly the way wi' lightness o' pace.
Poorly written maybe but familiar?

just found this and thought it amusing - "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It't the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." George W. Bush

What do you expect from the leader of the biggest country NOT to sign up to reducing emissions?
(Sorry if I take this 'off-thread')

I'm going to send an email to quote, unquote on Radio 4 to see if they can help
