Thanks all - I think the Grivel Spiders look the best option. The Grippers do look a bit too heavy duty, and Petzl thingies look good but I think straps might be better than rubber...

It's mainly for walking on frozen footpaths to get onto the fields (and crossing farmyards), but it should make staggering back from Tesco with a bottle or two in my backpack less of a scary prospect ;-)
Is that with empty bottles ? ;)

Dave - I vowed never to buy a Karrimor pack ever again when a strap gave way on a pack containing two bottles of wine. I know you shouldn't cry over spilt milk, but spilt red wine is another matter... The thought of slipping over on ice whilst carrying an evenings supplies is terrifying ;-)

The Climbers' Shop had the spiders instock for 19.99 inc delivery (by Royal Mail rather than one of those blasted couriers) which seemed as good a deal as was going...

Now I just need more snow ;-)
