Anyone interested in the results of testing various tent pegs in soft & hard ground and producing a factual table including weights etc?

Let me know if you are & I will test a range of pegs I use including MSR, Easton, Vango, wire pegs, snow steaks, y pegs etc etc.

I always carry small snow steaks and in winter carry larger snow stakes too. This is because the ground is so soft sometimes only a snow steak will hold. I also carry some round steaks that can be hammered through hard ground or ice.

Don't forget to test those "Delta" pegs...be interested how they stand up to the rest in your tests.

Ok guys

I will do a test and post pics if I can. I may not be able to get all the info in for a few weeks due to an iminent holiday
:-)

I don't have any delta pegs to test but would gladly try one if you anyone wants to donate one...

Cheers for the response & humour!

hi Hayden

how the devil are you.

just to let you know i am in possesion of some 6001-T6square section alloy pegs, that came with my Crux X2 Bomb. These pegs are really serious bits of kit that work extreamly well with hard stoney ground. They seem really resilient to bending and will hammer into the harshest of terrain.

As well as being annodised a loverly gold colour they are square....gotta watch the gear magpies at campsites though.

On the subject of snow-stakes...

I've been experimenting with designs (got some aluminium, some titanium and access to a lasercutter and other sheetmetalworking kit) so if anybody wants to mail me a spec for their "if only they made them like this" ideal stake, I'll try to get around to making samples and sending them to Hayden for testing, if he's up for it.

Of course, if you're from the USA, I'll have to use aloooominum for your stakes. :-)

Here are the results for the first batch of pegs I have tested. I will do a more thorough test later in the year when time allows. The messaging box unfotunately limited my origional table of results to plain text.

'Effort' is the pressure required to push peg into soft ground on a scale of 1-10.

The 'Grip' is the holding power of the peg on a scale of 1-10.

PEG Name Effort Grip
The twig 2.8, 02.5
Wire standard peg 2.4, 02.0
vango Y section peg 5.2, 04.5
Plastic + section peg 6.4, 06.0
Easton hollow peg 4.4, 03.4
MSR blizzard stake 6.4, 08.0
Large Snow stake 7.2, 10.0
Delta Peg (plastic) 8.0, 08.0

The following are on a scale of 1-10, 10 being excellent. These are authors opinion'Bulk being the pack size & stacking ability. 'Quality' is the authors opinion of overall construction & finish. 'Bling' is how cool the peg looks.

PEG Bulk Quality Bling
The twig N/A N/A 10
Wire standard peg 10, 1, 1
vango Y section peg 8, 6, 5
Plastic + section peg 6, 5, 5
Easton hollow peg 7, 7, 8
MSR blizzard snow stake 7, 9, 9
Large Snow stake 7, 8, 9
Delta Peg (plastic) 3, 6, 5

Hope this is usefull.
