PreVent - effective, natural. I would never use Deet.

Following on from what Calum says about body odour, I'd heard that eating Marmite or garlic is supposed to work although I have not tried this myself.

best non deet repellant we've found is Shoo!  apart from the slightly twee name it's mighty fine, and won't rot your skin like deet.

try here for it - shoo on sale

it arrived at a reasonable time for us.  Very good stuff, needs re-applying more often than deet (every 4 hours) but since that covers the majority of midge active time until I settle to sleep it works for me.

It can still make plastics tacky - but not to the same degree as deet.

Nothing really works. If it did, there would be lots of benidorm type hotels on those lovely west coast beaches. I love midgies!!

DEET can be a worry especially with direct skin contact as I believe it has the potential to be a carcenogen, if only in copius qty.

I use Bug Geroff which is good, also totally natural, citronella, eucalyptus etc...

You did not say if you were camping wild or on a campsite?

If wildcamping always try to pitch where there is a slight breeze as the little blighters cannot get around in wind or rain,a lesson learnt the hard way!

Avoid boggy/water source areas too as they like these are a magnet for them again try to pitch in the breeze thats blowing and not in a sheltered area..

Campsites well if you can find a breezy pitch i would prefer a wind better than the Midge..

And i have also found that they seem to like the colour Black for some reason, and try not to breathe as its this that attracts them!!the stuff that comes out of your mouth..

Might find that last one a bit hard but if you do master it let us know
