I popped into my local (Canterbury) M&S today and rather than the wonderful heavy duty plastic sporks they had disposable lightweight forks. Is this a nationwide phenomenon? Is it a temporary issue? Do we have to spend a whole fiver on a Tifoon?

They discontinued them because of all the OM members going in and nicking the sporks...

( I wonder if we'll soon see them for sale on Alpkit for a quid?)

Nah, I think it's temporary. Were they black plastic forks? Cambridge store had them a few months ago but it's back to normal now.

Doesn't really matter anyway, I have a nice stock of M&S sporks in my room. Keep one in my everyday rucksac, and one in the car... (sad?)

Venturesport in Norwich had some pretty good heavy-duty plastic sporks last week--or more accurately, a spoon on one end, and a fork/knife combo on the other. Shame about the price tho ... £2.99 for a plastic spork is a bit steep. Might just as well have bought a tifoon for £5.

The lunchpacks you can get on Virgin Trains include what I suppose must be called a 'spife', since it's a combination of a knife and spoon. In normal use it would be unbreakable, but as the old Mitylite guarantees used to say, probably not proof against "shark bite, bear attack and children under 5!"

For people who are as stingy as me I should report that the old style black M&S spoon will only allow the brewing of around 100 cups of herbal tea before becoming very britle. An early indication is the appearance of pits in the surface of the spoon.

I'd like to point out that this was in the work environment, I don't use plastic spoons at home.

Middlesbrough M+S has gone to crappy plastic forks but has some spoons which are the same quality as the sporks!

My local M&S still has the good quality white sporks. I'm beginning to get funny looks now, as I always pick up about 12 to go with my sandwich...

Why on earth do you need so many sporks?! Surely they're well enough made for one to last for years....

Indeed one cannot.

I also collect multiple sporks (and spoons) when buying a salad bowl.
