I got one a couple of weeks ago, I just need to go to boots to source replacement blades when needed.

Also need to source a lightweight mirror and I'm there.

Simon, I try and get away with that rugged mountain man look, but SWMBO won't let me.

Razors... hmmmm... I remember those... I recall using one back in the 80s. :-)

I personally prefer the cheapo one-time razors from Gilette or Wilkinson. They use the same type of blades than the more expensive ones therefore they are usuable many more than one time. One easily last for a two weeks trip for me. From a weight perspective they are half the weight of the Avid 4 and some (e.g. Wilkinson Protector Express, double blade) have a movable head which I personally find more comfortable than the fixed head of the Avid. Including shaving oil you are down to about 10gr. total for the whole 2 weeks trip.
Even the hairs of a grown beard during the trip might weigh more...:-)

Just tried this razor and it is brilliant value for money with 4 blades which last you approx 40 days. New blades? Nope, just buy a new one at a few quid (cheaper than blades anyway) I'll have some in stock shortly ;-)

What's wrong with any disposable razor? How much weight can you save?

Well, all right, to be remarkably pedantic about this:

'Ordinary' disposable razor 7g
Avid fancy 4 blade razor 15g

Therefore a 13g saving.......
However, for a shorter trip a single disposable razor is the ligher option, as remarked on by Lighthiker.

But to be (almost) serious, the Avid packs flat, reducing the chances of breaking the razor head.

Nowt much wrong with a normal disposable razor except they are touch fragile.

Maths was never my strong point either.

The Wilkinson Sword Extreme III razor gives me the best shave I've had from any razor and I am loath to change to any other. It seems to last and last which is something I can't say for other razors/blades I've used.
I've just weighed 2 of them on the dispensary scales. One is 5.4g and the other is 6.1g. Quite a bit of variation there.

Was puzzled myself, then realised NSJ's maths is fine, he's just doing a different sum. His goes 4*7=28 (4 single bladed disposables) 1 Avid = 15 therefore 15g saving.

The day I worry about 0.7g I will know I have gone too far.

Oops. make that 13g saving. Now who can't do maths. Doh!

Having read NSJ's post a bit more carefully it's really obvious what he meant. Thanks for giving me pause for thought.

The point about the avid and the swivel razor we also do, is that they are practical to pack, do the job very well, as well as being reasonably light.

This AVID one provides a very solid T, when it clips together and as we all know, there nothing worse than a BIC or similar breaking half way through our ablutions is there ;-)

But the key thing is it lies flat and as mentioned above, that makes my wash kit, of shaving oil, folding toothbrush and MSR towel - hyper dinky, but still able to give me that smug 'fresh as a daisy' look in the mornings ;-)

being a bit dim here but how on earth can you break a disposable razor when using it to shave. knees too knobbly?

Just tried out my Avid - very impressed. I also really like their shave gel stuff - much smoother than the shave oil I have used in the past - in fact I would say it is probably as good as those great tins of foam gel you get, but in a 15ml bottle.

As Bob says is really the 'packability' that is the attraction and I am a sucker for a nice bit if design! And if you really want to save weight you can always leave 3 of the blades at home, assuming you will be back in 10 days!
