Hi, i'd first just like to say hello, this is my first post in the forum. I need a new winter jacket for general use but mostly it will for around school and stuff like that. I was wondering if you had any ideas on what i could get. My limit is about £100 to £120 max so i'm working on a tight budget. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Jack.

Winwood seem to have the MOntane Superfly at £105 at the moment. You won't do better than that!

Does it need to be waterproof? Insulated? The superfly is a lightweight jacket.

Yeah that looks good but i was after an insulated jacket.

look at montane's verso (this replaced the solo which can still be had) or toasty jackets. the toasty being warmer than the verso. the verso for moving about in the cold or the toasty for standing about in the cold. depends upon what you'll be doing and the compromise you'll have to make. both are very water resistant.

Just another thought - Paramo Cascada here. Slightly over budget but worth considering as it is a good length. The lining makes it quite warm as you may have seen from other threads here. In winter I mine to work, general use, walking, when out with the camera standing around for longish periods, in fact a lot of the time in the colder months.

If you want a winter jacket for general, non technical use forget the specialist stuff. Instead, go to suppliers like landsend.co.uk.

I'd also consider a Paramo cascada for similar reasons as PGJ - you can save a bit more by getting it from http://www.whalleyoutdoor.co.uk/ who offer free postage. Ideal for wet miserable English winters with the long length & excellent peeked hood, warm enough that you don't need much underneath. I have all sorts of coats that do a great job keeping the elements out but the Cascada is my favourite because it's so soft and comfortable. My everyday jacket is a Paramo tiempo fleece which is a strange thing - I bought it thinking it'd be like a normal fluffy fleece that you'd wear under a waterproof - far from it - it's thin, not bulky, is not fleecy, covers your bum, has four pockets and a hood. Keeps the wind out completely (speed limit on a bike)- it's sold as only water resistant but I haven't got wet yet using it - plenty warm enough just over a shirt & it looks good.

i agree totally with the tiempo, do you know how it teams up with the fuera jacket. the taiga fuera combo is good, does this also apply to the tiempo/fuera?

 |
what about a RAB summit extreme jacket or one of that ilk?

My limit is about £100 to £120 max so i'm working on a tight budget. A general use winter jacket for around school and the like is something you can get in Primark for considerably less than £100. Despite the more overt attarctions of highly technical garments designed for mountainsides, you're just spending a lot more than you need to for general use. And if you do use a super-high spec jacket for slumming about town you'll wear off the water resistant finish and get it dirty which will impair the performance. This sort of thing really doesn't need anything fancy, so if you are strapped for cash I'd look at much less exotic fare and put the savings towards something you really need. if you want to go up a hill in the meantime, layer an extra pullover under a shell. Pete.

My thoughts exactly. Probably about £8 for a great big synthetic duvet jacket in Primark.
It won't have <insert favourite manufacturer's name here> on it, though...
You pay for materials that allow you to pack the thing small, light weight, and active cut design.

I have to agree with Pete and CP. I managed fine with a school blazer then a duffle coat and then a parka for my earlier years at school! After that is was whatever my paper round could afford which mostly came from places like BHS, C&A etc. I would suggest you should only get a "technical" jacket if you intend to go to "technical" places and do "technical" things with it on.........unless you just have loads of money to waste.
