MSR whisperlite woes

Petrol no problems, but every time I've tried using MSR Whisperlites with paraffin/kerosene sourced in Asia (China, India & Pakistan) it's been a nightmare: flaring, yellow flame, soot, blocked jets within one meal. With such fuel they're almost unusable, and I know a few other people who've had the same problem.

Is this par for the course, and are some of the alternatives (in particular the Primus stoves that also take gas cartridges) a better option?

I've run the MSR XGK and the Optimus Nova on dirty paraffin and they worked okay, if a little smoky. I've also used the Primus Omnifuel and Coleman Apex II with dirty paraffin and they've worked much like your Whisperlite.

I don't particularly like the Whisperlites with petrol in the UK. I don't know how it compares to paraffin but I find they take rather a lot of looking after.

I wouldn't consider using any multi-fuel stove in the UK - for gear nerds only, way too much hassle when you can just fire up a gas stove (at the moment, a Korean Pocket Rocket copy I picked up for a fiver in China). However, overseas is often a different manner, hence my interest.

One person I know bellyached about his Whisperlite's paraffin performance so much that MSR gave him an XGK for free...
