Head torch for cross-country running?

I bought a Petzl Myo XP to use for cross-country running a couple of days ago and it seemed to be the perfect head torch until I used it with rechargeable batteries (Ni-MH). The light output gets way too weak when used with rechargeables.

Is there any head torch that is sufficiently bright for cross-country running when powered by rechargeables? I guess that "sufficiently bright" for my needs means the light output from Myo XP powered by standard, non rechargeable batteries" and the manual says that it reaches 45 meters. I would like to avoid external battery cases if possible.

I have read somewhere that Silva L1 works good on rechargeables (due to some voltage control circuit) - is there anyone that can confirm this?

Grateful for any reply,
/Sven

PS I apologize if this is not the right forum for this question. If so, could anyone point me to a better forum?

what power rechargable batteries are you using? it may be the problem. You should be looking at around 1000mah for AAA.

I use 2700 mAh AA, so I guess that is not the problem...

- just checked my own MYo xp
- i could of sworn it used AAA. oops sorry!

ive not heard of this complaint. I wonder if any1 else has had similar issues?
Have you tried different makes and strengths of Ni-MH batteries. From experience different makes do seem to differ somewhat and the stronger Mah the better too.

The make I use is GP - I was told that they are good. It would of course be interesting to get your opinions on this too.
Silva L1 + Runners Kit works quite well. Here's info from Silva

James, do you use this for running?

What is the "Runner's kit"? Is it just a way of moving the batteries from your head down to your waist?

I don't mind carrying 4 AA's on my head. The only thing I worry about is whether I get bright enough light with rechargeables?

I think I read somewhere that with L1 you get as bright light with rechargeables as with non-rechargeables (the only difference being that rechargeables last a shorter time). Can you confirm this?

Thanks to all of you for your replies!

I may have raised a false alarm. I realized yesterday that I have used new unused Ni-MH-batteries, and that it may take a few recharge/discharge-cycles before reaching maximum capacity of the batteries. I will try again after a couple of cycles.

Best regards,
/Sven

Let us know how you get on. I have just bought the Myo XP and have found it great, but that was only using normal batteries.

Well, I tried it again tonight, having run the batteries through a couple of recharging cycles and tonight it worked like a charm!

I went running in the woods for 55 minutes and I had great light all the time! Iain, I hope you will get as happy with your Myo XP as I am with mine - it is functional and user friendly!

Now, what's left to find out is how well it works in temperatures below freezing point, but I guess those tests will have to wait another couple of weeks where I live...

Cheers, so far I've found mine excellent, but have been wary about using rechargables.

Ran up snowdon last thursday in rain, sleet and snow, left at 7 pm so well after dark and it handled the cold temperatures (around 2 at the summit) well. No complaints so far.
