Winter trousers
recommendations needed!

I'm in need of some new troos to keep my legs warm this winter, and as I am also needing a pair of salopettes for skiing, I was wondering if anyone here could recommend anything that might fit both bills?

I'm a beginner at skiing, so they'd have to be quite durable to match my falling over skills, and it would be nice if they didn't cost the earth...

If you're after ski salopettes, have a look in TKMaxx, or see the TKMaxx watch thread which is currently riding high in this section of the website.

a pair of Paramo Aspira salopettes would fit the bill for both - though you are looking at £200... TBH i find the sallies great for climbing, but they /can/ be a bit warm for straightforward winter walking, particularly if you also wear something like a buffalo top.

Paramo Cascada trousers (£80 from most internet retailers) would handle the walking bit with aplomb, and TKMAXX is a great location for finding skiing salopettes - you'd probably get a decent set for £50 - so by buying two items you would get kit better suited to their respective activities and save a bit of cash.

IMHO the two tasks have radically different demands, so finding one bit of kit that does both well is going to be a bit of a nightmare.

I too use Paramo Aspira salopettes for my skiing and some winter walking, and Cascada trousers for most winter walking. The salopettes have taken a lot of abuse but are still going strong after 8 years.

As rewrite says, occasionally the salopettes are too warm. And I don't think you'll get Cascada legs over the top of alpine ski boots. A good compromise might be the Aspira Trousers - which look to be available for about £150 - they have most of the features of the salopettes including reinforced seat, knees and ankle patches, and are still held up with braces, but stop at a high waist rather than a full bib.

There's a choice of cheap salopettes here. I've not tried any of them, but the other stuff that I've bought from there has been serviceable.

Well, you did say "it would be nice if they didn't cost the earth..."

for winter trousers i simply work by the use what you have principle i.e

If its cold enough (take into account wind chill) then i use a pair of thermal leggings with a pair of montane terra pants over the top(which are windproof).

If the weather gets really nasty i then don a pair of waterproof over trousers.

I picked up a cheapo pair of lined Craghoppers last year - think they were called the Winter Kiwis - perfect for walking the dawg - not sure they'd be suitable for anything more strenuous as they are rather warm.

IMHO they'd be great for market traders, dog walkers and people who attend rugby/football matches, but get too much of a sweat on and they'd be a bit hot. Unless of course you're a cold person!

But they were cheap - think I got them from Go Outdoors for just £20.

Thanks for all the responses!

I was hoping to get away with something like a pair of softshell trousers, with thermal leggings underneath for skiing.

I've got a Paramo jacket, and would love their salopettes, but I can't justify the price!

So it looks like i'll have to bite the bullet and buy seperate pairs - I think a trip to Decathlon is called for!
