I got a 7cm one recently.

Have used it for 5 nights over the last week or so. Very comfy, quality feel (no danger of overnight leakage)and nice and warm. I'm not a heavy chap (11st), and as such can't imagine that a 9cm one would yield much extra comfort. Perhaps there is a combination of boniness and weight which would need the extra 2cm.

On length, I would have to say that the standard one is not overgenerous (178cm). I'm just over 6ft and my feet dangled every now and then. Well over 6ft might want to consider the dlx model.

Regarding the short length one, I got mine for comfort, so a short one would kind of negate the main purpose of carrying those extra grammes in the first place.

I've just researched this very topic myself. I was looking for what I thought was an impossible combination of light weight, compact pack size, durability and something thicker than the standard inch or so provided by conventional sleeping mats which I don't find comfortable enough and seem to exacerbate my long-term lower back pain probs.

I found the American site Backpackgeartest.org particularly helpful providing a range of really detailed user reviews for all things outdoors and lots of comments on the Downmat 7 and the Insulmat Max Thermo. There are several other sites that provide unbiased user reviews too, including Trailspace.com.

Rapidly came to the conclusion that it was the Insulmat for me.

The Exped 7 is rectangular rather than mummy shaped, so a bit more wriggle room there. However, apart form being bleedin' expensive, its significantly heavier (910g inc mandatory inflator stuff sac  v 624g plus lightweight stuff sac), it packs fine (19cm x 15cm v the Insulmat's 25 x 13cm ), and some sites' reviewers report the Exped to feel almost too warm when the temperature isn't freezing. Crucially for me, they’re both well thick enough for a good night's sleep - Insulmat's 6.3cm v the Eped's 7cm.

On a less serious note, several users have used their Insulmat for a bit of lilo-type water sports, which it sailed through (pun intended), whilst I wouldn't want to risk an expensive load of feathers blatting down the river on an Exped.

Managed to bag a new Insulmat on eBay from the States for $32.56 plus $13 postage to the UK i.e. about £23. That's a lot better than the cheapest I could find the Downmat 7 in the UK - which seems to sell for around £90.

Not had chance to use it in anger yet, but it seems really comfortable. My one concern before I bought it was that it might be too narrow and easy to slip off it in the night. However, in practice, and with the mat slightly underinflated as recommended, it doesn't feel narrow at all - my weight seems to depress the inner tubes more than the outer tubes, meaning the outer tubes feel that they contain my body quite snugly, if that makes sense.

So all in all I'm well-happy with my Insulmat and looking forward to giving it a proper outing shortly.

On the subject of full length v short versions of sleeping mats, I spoke to a couple of friends who've used half length sleeping mats - they both regret not getting full length - legs getting noticeably colder in winter, much more uncomfortable, condensation issues and even ice on the non-mat sleeping bag under surface in the morning despite sleeping on jackets etc - nobody seemed to have too much good to say for shorties apart from weight savings, but the Insulmat full length mummy is barely any heavier than the Exped 7 half length, so no contest for me in the end.

I have 2 Exped down mat 7's.  They are very good if warmth and comfort are high on your priority list, far better than self inflating mats and ther is the problem, they take all of a minute or three to inflate and this can be a tad awkward if you have to do it in your tent.  IMHO - well worth the extra minute to inflate.

Hi alanon

Unfortunately it was a private sale on eBay. Just done a quick google and whilst Sierra Trading Post has them reduced to $37.95 but  they're sold out. Looks like most stores have this selling as the InsulMat Ether Thermo 6 - seems identical specs except slightly lighter at 600g - REI.com have them for $69 aand ditto Powderfin.com - dunno about postage though.

I have an Exped Synmat 7 DLX, which is the wider version (63cm). It's great, warmer and more comfortable than the Prolite 4 I was using up till then and very hard to roll off in the night. Wish I'd got it sooner.

Great comfort and warmth but mine punctured or leaked and I couldn't find puncture - suspect a valve problem. (in process of chasing up but luggage lost).

Used in Himalayas in sub zero temperatures and have to say that before puncture warmth and comfort were superb. A bit difficult to inflate - required some effort, especially at altitude.

WRT 7cm downmat, I only have the past 4 nights to go on but it really wad entirely more comfortable than any other camping mat I have ever used, including my pussers cot bed. It was warm, insulating, firm and had a nice texture to sleep on.

Ian, my first Downmat developed a fault in the valve shortly after I bought it. It went back to Lyon Equiment (the UK distributor) and they sent a replacement very quickly - excellent service. The replacement has been faultless, so far (had it nearly 3 years now).

My first two downmats had that problem too, they were both replaced without questions and the 3d one is just excellent.

Thanks for the advice. if my luggage turns up I'll chase it up. It seems a pity that the mat is so comfortable but performance can at times be an issue. Cheers - ian

Dicky, I bought a 9cm Downmat and then got the 7cm version (both full-length) so I have used both.

I much prefer the 7cm version.  It's just as comfortable as the 9cm and a fair bit lighter.  I actually found the additional thickness of the 9cm made it feel a little unstable - I always felt as though I would roll off it.

A poster mentioned that some users find a Downmat "too warm".  This is, of course, bollox.  Down insulates, it does not generate heat by itself.  I use my Downmat year round and it has never been too warm.

It's a fantastic bit of kit and I doubt that you'll find anything more comfortable to sleep on for the weight.  Remember to take a repair kit for extended trips.
