Hilleberg Atko vs Terra Nova Laser Competition Tents

I dont have a photo I am afraid, but we took our Terra Nova Laser (not comp) to Braemar at Easter, just before the road closed and experienced what the weather forecast said was 50mph winds with snow. The Laser flapped more than the semi geodesic tents nearby but with the 4 extra storm guys in use it did not worry us. I would expect an Acto to do no better.

Snow blew under the fly and piled up against the upwind end of the inner but did not get in.

Both Laser and Acto have bits that are flat enough to not shed snow well. There does come a time when you would be better with a steeper tent with more hoops but they both do pretty well

Snow loading on a single hoop tent is easily resolved with a sharp kick every one in a while...

Yeh (kicks himself) "why did i buy this pile of akto sh*te".

I think you will find snow of quantity will apply to your pile of TN LC shite too Diddy.

However just follow Petes advice -  lean back kick out and you will hear the snow flump to the floor.

WRT - vents George - yest the Akto is a two way zip with a cowl on the top. The end vents can be unzipped too. I have found that even with them unzipped in snow that the design doesnt let snow in through those vents, there is a low level overhang that covers them.

You might be mate - I would either:

A) taken a geodesic

B) booked into a hotel

edited to add:

C) wonder how I have managed to see this amount of snow on Dartmoor!

Thinking about all the parallel threads on solo tents going on at the moment, I'm tempted to launch a new one, but I'll resist the temptation and just add a kind of footnote here...

What's your dream solo tent (no pun intended/invited here)?

I love my Akto but I have to admit that even when pitched to near perfection those saggy bits near the struts are a bit of an anticlimax (I won't mention what they can remind malevolent critics of...). And of course it is just that little bit heavier than one would want.

 So here's my dream ticket:

--- weight: 900g/1Kg

--- double skin (or perhaps the sort of cavity-wall design of the Warmlite)

--- shape a bit like the Warmlite 2R (as in their 1970s catalogue, I suppose )

but a bit smaller and with a porch at one end.

--- top and end vents

--- two way zip

As I see it, the central hoop/side porch design has its good points but it doesn't give you a nice-looking tent.

The TN LC is let down, in my opinion but the lack of proper end vents (lifting up the pointy bits is poor design and also lets the slugs in...), lack of two-way zip and especially by the lack of a vent at the top of the door.

The Akto is better designed in that respect, but you get the 500g or so weight penalty.

Both tents are great in that they allow you to unhook part of the inner and get a very spacious porch if the weather turns nasty (you need a footprint covering the vestibule area too, though).

I've never seen a Warmlite in the flesh, but I like the structure and the venting idea behind it. The lack of a porch, however, is a serious shortcoming.

If I had any skills with a sewing machine etc. I'd be tempted to have a go at making my ideal tent myself.

Maybe one day someone will come up with the perfect design. There's definitely a gap in the market for obsessive solo tent users in a quandary (or a Hobson's Choice, if you don't think the options are horrible).
