I need a new jacket for walking in Scotland in the rain. Any thoughts on either the Mountain Equipment Ogre or the Rab Suilven?

Cheers

Suilven is ace. Might also want to look at the Rab Lofoten, very nice. Maybe even the Montane Venture. I am happy to talk on email about then differences and which might be best for you.

James.

I would definitely reccomend the suilven, top bit of kit.

Ive not had mine long though it definitely feels "bombproof" like the first look review on here says.

I wore mine on Beinn Narnain and Beinn Ime yesterday. No real rain but when I got near the summit on Narnain I pulled it on as the wind was getting very strong and I was getting wet from the cloud/fog. I wore it down the other side and up Ime and all the way back to the car as I couldnt be bothered to take it off and repack. I run very hot and had no problems with breathability. Definitely an eVent convert here! I also like the cut and the fit. The hood is excellent too.

£190 theoutdoorshop.com

I really should do a proper review on here!

I see james has the lofoten for a bit cheaper, definitely worth considering aswell.

I have a lofoten, and it's top class. Unbeatable breathability from the eVent, and the hood and high collar work brilliantly. Generally don't think you can go wrong with Rab kit, and eVent does everything Gore wish their membranes would!

I have an ME Ogre and am very pleased with it. I found that Rab waterproofs didn't fit me right (arms too long and too thin, hood design, not long enough to keep important things dry).

Definitely try a few different jackets on and see what suits you. We're all shaped different!

If you have something of the simian abnout you then the Montane Venture may suit you. I have just bought a size L and the sleeves are longer than the sleeves of my Superfly which is a size XL. The sleeves are also considerably tighter (and I don't have big arms by any means) but are just roomy enough for my purposes. The drop tail really is a drop tail and should keep the whole of your arse dry if not the backs of your knees (slight hyperbole there but you get the picture?).
Still, it has a good size hood and is made of event which I know works a dream compared with other "breathable" membranes.
