Hi,

does anyone know where I could obtain a pair of fleece lined overtrousers with a 3/4 length zip, which don't break the bank. So far I've spied the Montane Terra XT and the Buffalo Special 6. Does anyone know of any others?

Many thanks,

Simon

Not criticising, just trying to increase my knowledge. I can understand fleece lined trousers worn from the start of the day in cold conditions (and I think the Buffalo trousers come into this category with the zips for ventilation rather than to allow them to be put on while wearing boots). I can also understand waterproof or windproof overtrousers put on or removed during the day as conditions change, but under what circumstances would you use fleece lined overtrousers?

thought about looking at skiing / snowboarding gear?

To frum,

In July I will be going into conditions reaching -10oC. Whilst trekking I will wear longjohns, trousers and waterproof overtrousers. At the end of the day's walk i want something to put on to keep my legs warm without having to take off half my kit, whilst the temperature plummets.

NB I would just get into my tent, but because of the risk of thromboses at high altitude it is inadvisable until we need to go to sleep.

PHDesigns and Rab do down trousers, which may be what you are looking for, or maybe this synthetic one.

A cheap alternative would be a pair of Swedish M90 trousers. I can waddle around in these OK, but they are quite bulky to pack and probably not warm enough for what you are talking about.

Aha! By a stunning coincidence, I came across these fleece overtrousers today.

Simon,

I am not sure what you are trying to achieve exactly, but it seems odd to me to state that you'll be trekking in waterproof overtrousers. At -10C, it won't be raining so your primary concern will be avoiding the build up of moisture and keeping off the wind chill. In my opinion, you are likely to overheat in waterproofs no matter what magic fabric they are.

In those conditions I would probably go for a light long-john (such as Helly Hansen sport weight LIFA) and some softshell trousers, throwing on some fleece trousers and my waterproofs when I stop for the evening.

The surplus ones that Dandy MM posted look very good value, but it would be good to try them on over your trekking trousers. If you really want something roasty for non-UK dry conditions, I saw a pair of Helly Hansen 600 fillpower down filled salopettes in their Bicester clearance store for about £30 a while ago. You'd have to phone them to see if they still had them though.

I don't mean to come over as a HH rep... I just use their kit thanks to the proximity of that store when I am in the UK. And I reviewed the long johns here .
