Sadly -> taking my Scarpa ZG10 GTX Gore-tex lined boots back to manufacturer after a series of emails.

The issue? bought them for this year's Southern 50, last July, and started practicing and getting fitter. Result, fine at first, but now, just 10km leaves me with torn, bleeding and blistered heels.

The reason? some 'clever designer' put the seam for the Gore-tex layer vertically down the heel line, under a thin Cambrelle lining. Once the cambrelle has worn, you effectively have a knife edge running up and down your heel with each step.

Reading the forums, it seems that three or four other brands suffer the same issues with seams vertically aligned with the heel - Meindl, Merril and Karimor for starters.

I have to say that Scarpa's after sales bloke has been really fair, and he says they have very few returns, but I feel that this design is so fundamentally flawed that they must have real issues with it, and any other boot with a vertical pressure seam on the heel line.

Anyone else have experiences to share?

(for balance, light, comfy, fast over ground, waterproof, cool and tougher than they look)

I recommend U.S. made Danner boots. Yes, made in Oregon, not China. I know, amazing.

Their lightest are the mid weight "453"  GTX lined boots at around 2.4 lbs./pair. (gramms?  I dunno.)

I've had 4 pair since the late '70s and can attest that they are very durable. Buy one size wider than your street shoes to accomodate your feet spreading after a few days of backpacking.

Thirding Meindl Burma Pros, I bought a pair last year and they have been great, really comfortable once worn in and completely waterproof so far.  They're reasonably heavy, but feel pretty bombproof to me.

what are Danner's sizing like eric. are they proper american sizes? e.g. meindl make proper british sizes (because germany also use the same sizes - sensible people the germans - we've got big feet). a british size 8 or a continental 43 can be a variable feast of fit depending upon the manufacturer.

Parky,

 Danners are all in U.S. sizes. i.e I take a Euro size 46 which is an 11 1/2 U.S.

Every pair of Danners I've had were a good fit, unlike the too short KEENE eVent boots I've tried in "equavalent" U.S. sizes. Had to go one size up in the KEENE boots for a proper fit. However KEENE sandals always fit me perfectly at the stated size. (??)

Aa a basis of comparison in terms of quality, Danner U.S. military boots are considered the highest quality military boot available.  If they are "soldier proof" then they are good.

sorry to be a pain eric but are they "proper" us sizes? i.e. they actually are the correct size. a british size 8, for example, can be a hit and miss affair depending upon manufacturer.
