Hi Marc, if it were me, I'd be looking at buying one lightweight stove each, then you can carry one if you decide to go solo, or you'll still have two burners if going together. I've got an MSR Pocket Rocket, which is fine -fast, light, but you have to be careful when standing it up as it ain't very stable with pans on it!

Marc i presume you want it for car camping as appossed to backpacking? Go Outdoors is a good place to look. i am pretty sure most family stoves can run off either Calor or Camping gaz cylinders, you have to get different regulators like these at Outdoor Megastore which is another good shop. I use Camping gaz myself because as you said it's easy to get, especially in Europe. Hope this helps

I'd say Trangia is best for car camping myself. Compact, packs away nicely, uses meths (no chucking away used gas cans), robust, likes the wind... I could go on. Only downsides are: its a bit bulky (these days) if you're not car camping, and it generally takes longer to boil water than a gas stove. Lots of second hand Trangias on ebay.

It all depends on your set up guys - by the sounds of things you probably have a family style tent, in which case you are probably looking in the right direction - Camping Gaz - although initial outlay is expensive, burns quitely and cleanly (and you can take it abroad) - You should only have to change the regulator (for most dual ring stoves) to swap to calor gas (if that is what you prefer) - but do check this with your local retailer. If you are heading down the lines of a smaller more compact 2 / 3 man tent then I would go with Trangia and a spirit burner for valley / camp site camping - the 25 / 5 will give you enough capacity to cook for 3 people with non stick pans. The trangia will burn in a stable controlled way and is less liable to flaring and mishap. I find cooking with a spirit burner a very relaxing experience (as an aside) you dont have the urgency and noise of gas rushing to meet the air.

Have you checked out double burner stoves that run off 2 self sealing gas cartridges? Much less cost than starting off from scratch having to buy an expensive, heavy Calor or Camping Gaz refillable container. Friend of mine got a primus twin stove from Cotswolds which works a treat and packs down quite compactly (not for backpacking though)

For car camping I love my campingaz 'camping chef' with two rings and a grill. You can have the curry going on one burner, rice on the other, and a nan bread on the grill... pure luxury!! Retails about £40, but you also need a refillable bottle and regulator to go with it.
