How to fix a soaked down jacket

A while back, I managed to get my North Face Nuptse jacjet wet to the point that now, all of the down filling in the back section of the jacket has sunk to the waiste hem. Is there any way I can redistribute the down or is the jacket a dud?
There is some info here: Rab down care on how you can clean it at home, however if the down has migrated through the inner baffles, then this probably won't achieve that much.  Mountaineering Designs offer a cleaning, upgrading and repair service for down equipment.  However I have heard complaints of slow turn around time from a few of their customers.

It is possible to fix down clumping by putting the article through the normal care process, so washing in NIkwax Down Wash, followed by proofing in Nikwax Down Proof will help.

To best dry the item, set your washing machine to no spin for the Down Wash cycle and then low spin for the Down Proof cycle. Then (if you can) increase the spin speed a little and repeat a spin cycle. Do this a number of times.

It is then best to tumble dry on a low heat using a couple of old tennis balls in the dryer. It will take four or more hours to fully dry.

do not underestimate just how long it will take to dry. make sure you have a very large bag of coins if you have to do it in a laundry ette.

hi dan

when you say "all of the down in the back section" do you mean the entire back of the jacket? as in the stitching lines that ran across the jacket have failed, if so, sorry its knackered, and cost of repair you may as well pick one up cheap in a sale

if the down is still in the individual baffles then just put it in the tumble drier on low with a couple of tennis balls, and take it out every twenty mins and give it a shake, it will come back to life in about an hour

hope its number 2 and not number 1

Not the thread, but the last (i think 6th) post

Thanks

As  far as the jacket goes, I'd be wary of the drying machines in laundrettes - they tend to run on the hot side and it's possible, particularly if the thermostat on the machine is faulty, to melt some items of clothing / fittings like tabs etc if things get too hot.

I got the jacket out of the wardrobe the other night and it's not as bad as I remembered it being. Only one of the baffles in the back has gone, and most of the down in that section has worked its way into a corner. I'm looking out for some tennis balls as I don't think golf balls will do the tumble dryer much good

You can buy those knobbly drying ball things from Lakeland Plastics, tailor made for the job.
