SMC Topo maps on Vista

Anyone managed to get the SMC topo maps working in Vista?

Not only does the install file (registy patch) not install the SMC maps, it causes mapsource to stop working.

I've updated Mapsource, etc, etc, and i suspect it's something to do with the way the registrty entries are set up for this updated version of Mapsource....

I've not tried reinstalling the original version and NOT putting the Vista upgrade on, but i dont put much hope on that.

Any ideas? Anyone got it working? It used to work painlessly on XP and i don't fancy using another program to upload the maps to my GPS (i know there's a map upload utility, but you can't choose the maps - bit useless for my needs).

Have you tried it in Xp compatibility mode with run as an administrator ticked? Ive had a few progs that wont work at all in vista so Ive made my system a dual boot, and can select xp or vista depending on what i'll be doing, that could be an option if youve still got your Xp disk.

Thanks, but that doesn't work for me.

IT's only once i run the registry patch that it packs in, so it's something to do with that.

OTOH, i do have 2 PCS running simultaneously on a KVM switch, so i've decided to install the mapsource on there. I'm only going to use it every couple of months to change contour data, and if i can maange to squeeze Wales, Lakes and parts of Scotland on it, then even less often.

It gets worse.

Thought i'd install it on my old XP machine, where it's worked 1st time, every time and guess what?

Yep, same error message....

So here i am getting annoyed, and when i get annoyed with a PC it's either a hammer or i hack in the registry.

Turns out that the readme file with the software is now wrong! It used to work - put Contours V2 in C:Garmin and you're sorted.

The registry showed this to be in Garmin\Program Files, so moved files and sorted. Just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Anyone got Contours working with Vista then?

Andy,

I think the last 2 lines of tdave's last post give the answer. That's where the files are located on my vista laptop and Contours work. I had to move them into the C:Garmin directory.

Sorry but it doesn't seem work like that on my mapsource install, there's no loc keys in the registry at all, maybe the registry is laid out different on the 64 bit version of Vista. But there are definately no keys for products that are obviously identifyable (sp).

The first two lines of tdave's last post gave me enough of a clue to realise he's talking aboutstill installing it to an XP machine for now. As I am going to have to do also until some brighter spark than me works out a hack around.

I do however reserve the right to be wrong at all times
