Hi all, I'm in need of a new outer jacket for when out on the hill and what have you but am also planning a skiing trip for early next year so was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a jacket that could work for both. Spending c.£150.

Thanks chaps

Your £150 could be extended to a jacket worth about £250 with current sales, and the introduction of a new Gore Tex material, check out all the sales adverts you see on this website and in the Bargain ALert post for exceptionaly good bargains. Ski Jackets tend to be less technical then a moutnain jacket as they dont really need to be as waterproof as it shoudlent really rain whilst skiing. You will get a good coat for your money if you get one from a sale

Skiing doesn't really need anything you won't get in a conventional waterproof or good soft-shell.  Advanced skiers may want collars and skirts for deep powder, but they'll just get in the way most of the time on the hill.  I'd be inclined to get what you want for walking and just layer under it for the cold when skiing.  pals of mine are BASI instructors and they never wear ski specific jackets, which is a pretty good sign you don't need such a thing...

nothing to add to what smeg and peter have said.

the strechy fleece (power fleece?) under a shell is excellent - it emphasises my expensively gained stomach a treat.

Montane SuperFly's from last season can be had for less than your budget right now. The cut is baggy enough for layering for skiing and the hood fastens away as well. It's a fine jacket for the mountains if you like the features and fit.

Rab's Latok Alpine is also available around your budget with similar features, I prefer it. But it's again down to fit and the Rab has a closer cut, so less room for layering depending on your body shape.

What size do you need? There's a Montane Superfly XT here for only £120. Sizes M and L out of stock though...

I switched to soft shell for skiing a number of years back, and haven't looked back.  Go for a Rab VR Trail jacket...

But there's no reason why decent waterproof and fleece won't serve you well enough.
