I am getting some new Fuel Bottles for Meths for the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Group I run. The standard choice is a half litre (or 600ml) or litre bottle. For those of you out there who have run groups with Scouts, cadets, D of E etc, what quantity of meths do you find you get through either per day, per (trangia) cooked meal or per size bottle? Ideally I want to do some simple maths (accepting that its not an exact thing) so I know that say 2 people can cook 3 meals per day over 2 days and have adequate meths in a 600ml bottle. The idea is to avoid them carrying either to little or too much (as uneccesary weight), and for me to spend my pennies wisely on the right bottle size.

Paul, I reckon you COULD get away with 600ml bottles for the regime you suggest, but to be honest I'd advise you to get the 1litre Trangia bottles.

You dont HAVE to fill them up, and the extra weight of the bigger bottle is negigable (sp?). I prefer the trangia bottles to Sigg, as they have a nifty valve thingy in the lid that preventsthe scouts dousing themselves in meths. Well, most of the time.

And if you decide that more meths needs to be carried, then you dont have to supply another bottle.

Thats my thoughts anyway.

Thanks Si. Musing on this since I posted, I'm inclined to agree with you, and as you say, a one litre bottle would flex from 2-4 days in principle and you simply fill 'em against your duration. You're thinking of the safety valve I think, which is good - you can buy them seperate and fit them to Siggs (as the best of both worlds)on a standard thread but it'd work out more expensive.
