GSB Crampons - worth having?

Does anyone have any experience of this Grivel/Scarpa crampon attachment system? Is it convenient enough that it should affect one's choice of boots? Any likelihood of other boot makers adopting it?

It's about time for me to renew my crampons and I need a set of Alpine boots so this is a question to which I need an answer ...

 Cheers,

 Leifur

it should not affect your choice in boots

always buy the boots that fit

the gsb system has its pros and cons, if you end up with scarpa then it is an option, but they wont fit any other boots, so if you get a strap toe and quick heel clip crampon you can put them on many boots,

people have rumored of stones getting stuck in the slot, or the tab getting stuck

others say its excellent secure no problems

i dont fit scarpa generally so dont have the option,

I would say buy the boots then the crampons to fit them.

I have never used the CSB system but it does look good. I have used crampons with a  heel clip and found them fast and easy to use so a heel clip and toe wire is a good alternative.

The one thing with the GSB system is if I brought a B3 pair of Scarpa’s and fitted them with CSB crampons I couldn't ever use those crampons with my B2 boots if I wanted too as they just wouldn't fit.

I think I'm correct in saying that Meindl also uses the GSB system on some of its boots, see this page. I haven't used the system but I can see there are some possible advantages, notably in dealing with the fit of the crampon to the boot and wear - with a GSB crampon it shouldn't matter if the edge of the sole unit wears down through repeated kicking into snow and ice.

I can't remembr who it was, but someone here who uses a set posted saying that they didn't have any issues with stones jamming into the slot in the boot. The hole is quite narrow, so it may be that they simply don't get into it. I'd be more concerned with frozen snow clogging the opening, but apparently this isn't an issue.

The Scarpa Mirages fit me well, so I got the GSB Airtechs to match. I used them last winter and they were fine. I like the shorter points of the Airtechs. It's a very easy to use and secure feeling attachment system, longevity, who knows?

You do get paranoid about the slots on the boots clogging up though.
