Show/hide user stats

Setup - Units - Position format - British grid ?

The manual is unhelpful on the System menu options ! Like most pieces of electrical equipment I just work through every option on every page to see what's available.

I too got one a week ago for £50. Just looking for a place to buy the interface cable from as the Garmin price is a rip-off.

I'm interested in where the WAAS/EGNOS reference stations are in the UK and more info. on the satellites I pick up.

GPS Utility looks like the best shareware software.

Not sure about the e-trex but I have a garmin.  I would imagine it is similar.

Are you talking about the grid size on the screen or actual map grid refs?

If you are talking map refs then you should choose the 'WGS 84' British grid which is probably in the set up menu under navigation, map datum.  This should work with most british maps and probably some overseas as well.

Most of the other datums are for if you use maps in other contries where the grid is different.

Maps sfor the cumbria area will start NYXXXXXXXX, London TQXXXXXXX, etc etc.  Have a look at the british grid map(googe it) and you will see where the letters come from.

You may also be able to use 'Ord Srvy GB' map datum which should work with OS maps.

If you really struggle to get it to behave as you want try Longitude and latitude but this will not be as acurate...

Try this if the above was a tad confusing!

Either use Lat/Longitude (eg- hdddºmm.mmm) with datum to set to WGS84 or go for the British National Grid with OSGB36 - (Ord Srvy GB)

Good luck!

Hi Daytona, where did you get one for £50?

Grid refs are 5 digit (XX9999999999) giving 1m resolution

I've got brain fade and can't work out what resolution the various options for lat. & long. give -

hddd.dddddº (decimal)

hdddºmm.mmm (default)

hdddºmm'ss.s

Selecting British grid units automatically changes the datum to ord srvy GB

Selecting lat & long. units automatically changes the datum to WGS 84

I have the old version of the Etrex Vista C. If your GPS has the same menu system as mine, then you need to select:

SETUP - UNITS - British Grid.

The maps will then display an OS grid reference every time you move the pointer.

Regarding the interface cable. Before you look at buying one, check that you haven't already got one that fits. My garmin takes a standard mini-USB connection. This is the same as both my Canon digital cameras and most portable hard drives. I have interchanged them with no problems.

If you need to buy a cable, try www.cableuniverse.co.uk. I have had nothing but good service from them, and they're cheap!

If you're looking for the serial cable, F&T have it in the sale at half price Garmin Serial Cable

Another good source for cables is here.

Egnos ( European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) receives, corrects & re-transmits GPS data to civilian satellites for us to receive - I can only access them from 800ft and more in Cornwall so the service is not overhead for us.

The service was designed to be used by Farmers amongst others.

I've not noticed that it makes any 'real' difference as my Garmin 60Csx can take me the right side of a hedge without it.

Elevation data seems pretty good too, I can sit half way down our tide gauge and get a 'zero' reading.

I bought a combined car power and serial data cable for $23/£12 from eBay in the end. Gobsmacked when it arrived just 4 days later via standars 1st US Postal Service.

If carting basic bits of kit half way around the world is what it takes to avoid rip off prices, then so be it, and to hell with the environmental consequences.

Brian - to insert links you need Java switched on so you get the edit symbols at the top of the edit window. Select the chain button.
