Hello all

I recently registered with this site and created a thread regarding what back pack to get and had some excellent advise so I thought I would try again......

I am going to be travelling for 1-2 years going east to India, Pakistan, Tibet, Nepal and a lot of east asia on to Oz, Nz then south and central america.

I need some boot (or I assume I do) as I will be spending my time trekking, general wandering and of course chilling (not need for tha I appreciate ) and wondered what yout opininons on boots (or other sugestions) are.

I have tried on a few and really like the Salomon Mega Trek 6 Light Gtx: http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/eshop/Salomon-Mega-Trek-6-Light-GTX-Mens-Walking-Boot---SS07.html.

Basically: I am going to need something that is light, versatile and hard wearing.

Any advise is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Rog

In that time I feel for sure, having read details of such concentrated long drawn out treks, that you will be needing a lot more than just one single pair of boots to last your long journey there. Maybe take along a good pair of fabric type lighterweight walking boots-like a Meindl make or some such brand-on your feet at start point and a lighter spare pair of walking shoes-either fixed onto or put safely inside of the pack! Replace boots as needs dictate as you go on, just then as required, but do try to plan ahead to shop where and when you can do or are able to do. Good boots were quite hard to come by for instance in South America even just a few years back ago, outside of the big cities! So make sure you do have some kind of a spare pair plus some spare laces with you! Either way some good inner shock reducing insoles like Sorbothane reds will be of great use to you! I would go for a boot that does as much as possible in its design too with a built in waterproof Gore-tex or event inner bootie maybe.

Peter's idea of relying more on the use of specialist outdoors walking type sandals will likely pay off big time for you here in your specific trip type too! Great to cut down on the weight at some stages of the trip, rather than a spare pair of boots or shoes weighing heavier in your pack, where and when the prevailing climate more kindly allows you to. Good to go to beach parties and the such like in of course too!
