Hi folks,

I'm on the lookout for a decent Polartec Micro classic or 100 weight pullover and have been looking at the Rab pullover and MHW Micro chill. Both very nice but I see Montane have their Pulse pullover available, anyone had a chance to try these out ?. I am a big fan of Montane so will be very tempted if they are rated. Next question would be sizing, I'm a small / Medium so tempted to go with the Medium.

i like the pulse a lot. the thinner fleece in the sides and arms reduces the bulk when under a jacket. comfy and the mesh lined chest pocket is a useful size. get your normal montane size.

I have one and very impressed with it. The warmth to weight ratio is excellent and it has a very good map pocket and a very handy zip which goes right up to the neck to keep warmth in.

In reference to sizing I am an XL and their XL fit me (although a bit snug). I would say their clothing tends to be slightly on the small size so a medium would probably fit you fine.

I am a tad confused about some of Montane's stuff. There is the Pulse, which seems a nice midlayer, but then there are things like the Oryx and Kinetic. Montane's website has a load of technobable about them, but I am unclear as to the functional significance of the differences. I sort of get the impression that you could use the Oryx as a midlayer but also a baselayer when its very cold, where is would wick better than the Pulse.  But maybe its not as warm?

Is there anyone out there who understands this and could explain?

I got myself the Montane Pulse pullover, very pleased with it, nice fit a Medium (not too baggy or slim fitting either), will be great as a thick pullover/baselayer or mid layer.....excellent quality too with no loose threads, nice flatlock seams etc.....handy big pocket for my ale credits too, result.

I agree, I saw them in the Sauciehall St, Glasgow TK Maxx last week and they looked v good value for money.

A bit late, Raffy as you now have a Pulse shirt but here goes.

I have both the Pulse and a Kinetic shirt and I have to say that I prefer the Kinetic.  It is a bit less warm than the Pulse but, being smooth, it moves really well under top layers.  It also seems to move with you better than the Pulse, being more flexible.  I prefer the cuffs on the Kinetic as they are closer-fitting; the only thing that bugs me about the Pulse is the flappy cuffs.  I keep meaning to bung some elastic in the cuff seams.

So, both good products but for different purposes.

Cheers Jake, I agree with you with regards Montane gear, I have a Dynamo and Superfly Xt jacket and rate them both, top quality and functional kit that you can get for a good price...especially if you visit the factory shop in Ashington near Newcastle......!

With regards the Kinetic, I've actually odered one from Sportshoes.com....they have them in medium for £25 !

Now to sneak them all past the wife.....

Raffy, you clearly have not yet developed the cunning of the hardened Montane addict.

Order online after she's gone to bed; get it delivered to your work address.  All packaging goes into the bin at work.  Smuggle items into your house in your gym bag and work on the slightly-raised eyebrows and suprised response of "Oh, you mean you haven't seen this old thing before?" to the inevitable question which will eventually get asked.

I have 2 Featherlight windshirts, a Prism jacket, a Superfly rain shell, a Verso jacket, a Dynamo softshell, a Kinetic shirt, a Pulse fleece and the fantastic Extreme smock.  I haven't even got around to trying the trousers yet...

Strange isn't it. For me it's the fit, an XL top and L trousers just fit perfectly and make you feel like getting out and doing something.

Cunning plan Jake, always a worrying time when you put a new jacket or top on for the first time and her that must be obeys gives you 'the look'....

 My Bro in law has a pair of Montane Terra trousers and loves them....uh oh...must resist just popping into the shop for a 'browse'...

Same here, Michael.  I'm a short-arse and a bit lardy to boot - hardly the kind of physique that outdoor clothing manufacturers have in mind when designing garments - yet Montane's medium-sized upper-body clothes seem almost tailor-made for me.  They're not too long in the arms, a good fit across the chest and have just enough allowance to accommodate my (ahem) ample waist.

Even the Extreme smock (must stop going on about it, I know) which is not very stretchy is a good, if snug, fit.  Just pulling it on in the car park before walks on Dartmoor a couple of weeks ago made me want to stay out all day.  Good kit makes me work harder, just to see if it works under harsher conditions.
