Hiya

Looking for a fleece jacket for mountaineering to layer over a baselayer and micro fleece when it gets really chilly. How about the Rab Ghost jacket? Anybody got one who could advise??

 Thanks!

Hi ya Monkey

I bought the Ghost jacket a couple of weeks ago in the sales and so far I've been impressed.

This is only the second Rab I have found with enough width in the shoulders, the sleeves are quite tight (and im a skinny git  ) but the pro stretch panel seems to have a lot of 'give'. There is also a a pro stretch panel runnning down the side (from armpit to hem).

The only "negative" thing I have found is that the pro stretch panels do let the wind through, but as I normally wear a long sleeve baselayer this isn't so much of a problem. But I assume it does add to the breathability so is probably not a negative really.

On the plus side the rest of the fleece is very warm and windproof.

I am not sure you wil get it on over a baselayer AND a micro fleece, Rabs website call it a close fitting fleece, and it is. If you look here :http://www.rab.uk.com/products_fleece_ghostjac.html there is a review from trail magazine alongside that says it ideal as mid layer.

Hope that helps?

Oddy

p.s Just for info I bought mine from Cotswolds half price, I cannot see them online anymore but they had some in store last week.

Thanks Oddy,

Cotswold have run out online (and I don't have a store near me) but there are a couple of other online retailers that do have them still at about £65.

Having read another thread about this layering malarky I think i'm going to stick with my usual base layer - micro fleece - windproof/waterproof shell system and add a down jacket for winter (probably the ME Helium Ultra). I get very hot when walking/climbing so only need the extra insulation for stops/belaying.

Might treat myself to a Ghost jacket anyway though as my mid layer fleece while they're cheap(ish)

 Thanks for your help!

I've just found them (and bought one!) here: http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/mens-clothing/0821468025349 for £40!!!

 Bargain.

Be VERY wary of the Gooutdoors site, especially if you found that link via Google. I've found that they seem to think that removing a product from the menu structure is all they need to do when it goes out of stock, but they leave web pages up and even worse dont set stock levels to zero, so you can go through the order process before finding they have none,

The RAB Ghost isnt shown on their fleeces menu now, neither is it available via the search function. On the other hand you may just be lucky and they've removed it since your order.
