Boot fitting in Scotland

Hi, does anyone know of a good walking boot fitter in Central Scotland? Has anyone used Altberg recently?  I'd go down to Yorkshire if there's no-one based locally - but they seem to be getting a variable reputation at the moment.

Braemar/Caingorm Mountain have a good reputation for boot fitting.  Not what you'd call "central", but it's not too far out of the way if you're in that neck of the woods for a dander in any case.

Thanks Pete, I'll be up there in a couple of weeks anyway.
not lived in scotland for the last 5 years, but always found tiso's did a good job when I was in Edinburgh.  Depends what you mean by central.

The last pair of boots I bought in Scotland was in Tiso's (Rose St in Edinburgh, I think). That was about 25 years ago.

More practically, I visited Altberg in January for a fitting. I wanted a pair of leather boots without a membrane lining and was having difficulty finding a suitable pair - I have a wide forefoot and relatively narrow heels. The left forefoot has become wider in recent years by the development of a bunion. Anyway, I left Altberg having ordered a pair of boots which are being made for me. Delivery in 1st week in April (quite slow). Although Altberg say they will custom make boots for you they seemed relectant to custom make mine even though I said I was prepared to spend the cash. The boots being made for me are from their "made to order" ranges rather than custom made (where a last is made of the purchasers foot). I'll post a reivew of the boots when I eventually get them. I have to return to Altberg for a fitting when the boots are ready. The price for this is all of £89. If these boots fit properly they'll be worth every penny! I should say that the fitter who worked with me spent ages finding a boot size/shape that was suitable and much of that time was spent trying on boots made by other manufacturers. It was almost like he didn't want to be seen promoting his own product. If I thought a "custom made" boot was required I would spend the money but I was told such expense was not required and that a standard last was fine. We will see.

Bought mine in  Braemar Mountain Sports and service was excellent and a good choice of boots. I seem to remember they have a return policy as well as long as you haven't worn them outside.

There's also Outdoor Action in Arbroath but that's probably harder to get to than Braemar or Aviemore for you. Also the range of boots isn't so extensive.

Scott

Thanks,  I'll try BMS when I'm up that way over Easter.

Cotswold in Glasgow did a good job for me a few years back. The boots are still a great fit.

 Donald,

Give them a phone first as they like to spend a bit of time and don't always have the appropriate staff available. When they fitted me they said it could take as long as 2 hours-in the event it only took 45mins but it's nice to know they are prepared to spend time with you. I suppose it prevents them getting returns.

  Good luck.

Thanks again Scott, I'll do that.
