Saloman 3D XA Ultras

Quick question, I'm looking to buy some Saloman 3D XA Ultras for trail running (forest tracks, canal towpaths that sort of thing).  Thing is that I can only get the women's model to fit me as the heel cup in the men's shoe is too wide.  My concern is that as an 84 Kg guy, the midsole cushioning won't be sufficient.  Any advice or inside knowledge would be helpful.

What's your usual running shoe, and why is it not good enough for what you have in mind?  Is there any particular reason the Salomons appeal over alternatives?  Do you usually wear a cushioning shoe, and/or a motion control shoe?

One thing to note is that the usual things a dedicated off-road shoe does better is grip in goop, but goop is pretty soft so needs less cushioning.  Fell shoes typically assume the ground will be doing almost all of the cushioning for you.

Hi Peter, my normal shoe is the Brooks Addiction 8 as I pronate slightly.  I want these specifically for trail running as they seem to have a good combination of stability, grip and cushioning.  Inov-8 shoes look to be a bit on the thin side of cushioning for me.  I've been running off and on for 20 years now and am getting back into it after a break due to ITB problems that caused a lot of pain.  My aim is to compete in next year's Tring to Town Ultra (45 miles along the Grand Union Canal) so road shoes won't quite cut it as the race is in Feb and conditions under foot will vary.  Having ran Trailwalker (100km) a number of times as well as the old South Downs 80, I know that road shoes don't provide the protection from stony ground.  I was recommended Salomons by a mate who's heavily into adventure racing and I like the look of them.

If you want a "do everything in one run" shoe then a trail runner does seem like a good choice.  If you like Brooks already and you know they fit you well then you could probably do a lot worse than stick with their trail running options: a quick Google turns up Adrenaline and Cascadia models that may fir the bill.

But I'm by no means that well informed on running shoes, so i'd be inclined to go to a retailer with a good reputation and a selection and see what they think.  Hope you get some suitably Magic Slippers!

Pete.
