Thanks for the info guys.  All useful stuff.  i fancy having a go at making one for the fun of it - I might end up buying if that project fails.

Me too, although at £7.95 from the army surplus link from Trevor, I can't see it being cheeper.

There's a lot of info out there and I didn't realise there was so much to it. Have to see how it goes, but it'll be fun trying!

PleeeaaAAAssse don't waste your money on the £8 string type hammock mentioned here and expect to sleep in it! They might be fine for kids to knock about with on the beach or to use as a storage hammock, but Trevor can't seriously suggest sleeping in one.

I know. I've tried it. They are the most uncomfortable, irritating, painful and awkward hammocks of their type to get in and out of, let alone use a sleeping bag in. Really. Please forgot it. Don't!

As I mentioned before the HH is okay, but over totally over engineered, the DD Travel hamoock is certainly the best value for money, as well as practical, with the bug netting (shame they are out of stock at the mo) and the polyester / parachute silk types are certainly the most luxurious feel to them.

If you want to sleep in a parachute type, buy a double as you can then lie slightly diagonal and virtually flat. I've spent many an hour dozing in them on warm days when travelling and at BBQ's! If you don't need jungle netting then they are perfect and we've certainly sold plenty of them over the last few years.

Finally, I've had a go at making most things for the outdoors with the sewing machine, and I very much doubt you'll be able to save anything buying material from Pennine and making it yourself. There's a surprizing amount of sewing involved, as you need double stitched hems and lots of reinforcement at the ends. If you go down the 'zipped in bug net' route, there's even more work sewing in a 8 foot zip and not making a hash of it. Of couse give it a try, but certainly consider the options first.

So save your money and treat an £8 hammock as a fun toy, which digs in and gives you criss-cross patterns up your back for the 10 minutes it lasts on the beach, before you painfully crawl back into your tent
