I was in the Lake District last w/e for the first time in years. Not being used to terrain, I brought my montane windproof smock to wear over my Cambia t-shirt and my buffalo teclite (for any extreme changes I may encounter). In general the weather was windy but actually quite warm (well beyond buffalo temperatures - felt a bit of a pillock for bringing it really) and while the windproof smock was very handy, I could actually start to see where the Fuera smock or jacket may come into the equation.

I'm interested in what improvement you expect with a Fuera smock as opposed to your Montane windproof smock?

Graeme, having worn both I can tell you that my Montane Pertex windproof smock was inclined to soak up my sweat, spread it across the fabric to evaporate consequently leaving me feeling chilled. The Fuera doesn't do that and so it's more comfortable.

the montane is very thin and hugs you in the wind which i find offers little protection from windchill. the fuera is of sturdier fabric and it takes more to make it hug you and i find it much warmer than the montane - warm as in not cold rather than phew! warm! - and more water resistant. summer comments only.

interesting mc - was your montane proofed?

Show/hide user stats
No it wasn't proofed. I did wash it in Nikwax's 'detergent' (I can't remember the name) but didn't use their waterproofing agent. It may have been caused by the backpack pushing the Montane onto my back and then the capillary like action in Pertex doing the rest. All I remember is half way up to the tarn near DollyWaggon pike I found my back very damp and with the very fresh wind blowing at the timeI found I was shivering. I hadn't noticed this problem before, possibly because on this occassion it was chillier than usual.

I would expect, as Parky says, the Fuera to be much more robust and slightly more resistant to water. The Montane smock is amazing, but only really slightly showerproof.

that reminds me. two weeks ago (was it? i think?) out in fuera, which wasn't the best choice as hindsight proved as i forgot to put the atomic in my rucksack, in constant heavy drizzle, light rain. very wet shoulders was all i suffered in it. the forearms began to wet out a bit but everywhere else kept the rain out. damp back as usual from the rucksack and serendipity found that leaving the hood draped over the top of the rucksack stopped most of the water going down between my back and bag otherwise it would have been a very wet back too.  i would have been better in my atomic jacket. i was never that uncomfortable but there was always that niggling doubt of i hope i don't get any wetter. this was in the chilterns with easy access back to transport. if it was somewhere more remote i would have abandoned the day.

I might find that preferable Generally if I'm sweating then I'd appreciate anything that cools me down a little, but removing the windproof would be going too far. But then I do run extremely hot.

That doesn't sound so good, but it does sound familiar! It's a while since I've had a thin pertex wind shirt, but sometimes I find the thicker fabrics (e.g. the Paramo) to not be breathable enough. I can out-sweat anything! I'm pretty sure the thin Pertex was better in that regard (although not quite as water resistant). I guess I need both

I've found the Fuera jacket to be warm as in it seems to trap or hold more body heat and it's not as breathable as I'd like. The smock seems to be cooler and a bit more breathable, although even that can feel clammy after a climb. I'd recommend the Fuera smock to the Montane Pertex windproof smock any day.

Major Cynic

Is that the old style Fuera jacket or the new Fuera Peak jacket?

Show/hide user stats
I have the old style Fuera jacket. The difference in weight between the Fuera jacket and the Fuera smock is surprising at 242 grams and I'm not sure that it can all be accounted by a change in length.

I think it's probably the same material. Lots of design changes in the smock - no anology lined hood or poppers to attach it (a big weight loss) ,  no big poppered storm flap, less 'pockets' etc.

In the end I gave my Fuera jacket away (I got it free with a Taiga) - it's very nice but just too bulky/heavy to carry as a windproof really. The only real reason to keep it was the lovely hood but the caps do that job very well instead.

The fuera smock might be slightly nicer than a light speed but it is also quite a lot heavier which can certainly be a factor.

I came to the same sort of conclusion about the Taiga in the end. It's currently running on casual duty and getting used rather more than it should in August!

(comes of living in Manchester I guess....)

I guess, I guess.... Martin ..... no I don't want to know what temperatures you have up there. I'm down in Watford and the temperature down here is in the low 20s and I'm barely comfortable in an ordinary shirt. barely comfortable as in too warm!! The only 'jacket' I wear at the moment is to keep the rain off. As for a fleece well hopefully wearing one of those is still 2 months away. Sheeesh!
Show/hide user stats

Well the forecast says 19 or so. But it's been a long time since we've seen the sun(none today), there's a bit of wind around and a fair bit of rain in an on/off manner. Manchester is in fact normally reasonably warm due to all the nice fluffy cloud cover it gets

Still it probably is a bit too warm to be wearing it and I'm not most days but really I shouldn't be able to even think about putting it on. Was certainly handy when a pretty apocolyptic thunderstorm hit a week or two back.
