Now I disagree here. I like winter troos to be closer-fitting so they don't pick up mud and snow. Summer ones - when I'm not wearing shorts - need to be looser to keep me cool. I  wear Cascadas in winter and so unfortunately they get blathered.

I can't see how a close fitting reduces the pick up of mud and snow!?**!! But do I really want an explanation

I think a closer fitting provides more warmth so that's better for winter and I agree a looser fit in summer to help keep one cool.

Personally I like Millet trousers as they are stylish and a closer fit than many if not most. And like Paul I love Schoeller fabrics.

Winter-weight leggings and tighter troos tend to be shorter and narrower so they don't keep being lashed by the muddy boots of the opposing foot.

NPC, thanks for the correction of my spelling.  Not sure what the hell I was on when I typed ascetic.  I knew it was wrong and was going to spellcheck before I posted, but then got side tracked and sent it before checking.

We'll have to disagree on the close fitting trousers though.  My reason for closer fitting trousers is not to trap all of that insulating air.  It also allows faster wicking of sweat etc away from the body.  Cats may not sweat in the heat, but I certainly do!

On the whole, I prefer close fitting for all year round as they keep cleaner and look better.  The alternative of walking like John Wayne is only recommended when in crampons.

I think we may disagree on the seasons too.  I work with MLTUK seasons - winter means snow and ice, summer means not winter.  Therefore cold, rainy January days are still summer days (also I would be out of remit if I took a group into the hills on a non-summer day, so I try to maximise the definition of summer).
