Hi,

Does anyone know of good mapping software available on blackberry phones. Ideally would like the functionallity of  the View ranger software.

I have a Blackberry 8800 wihich has a bult in GPS receiver so would ideally like to utilise this rather than purchase a seperate.

Any feedback would be good.

Hi Daddio,

I've also just got one of these and been looking around. I've used Mobitrak on my old Nokia but found trackbuddy to be the software many seem to be using. I've downloaded a version but not yet installed it as you need the Blackberry Desktop Manager installed to copy .jar & .jad files to it. I've tried to go the other way and d/l via a website but the BB doesn't seem to want to play.

I'll update this if I get it to work. Up until now my best solution has been Memory Map running on a PDA (Dell Axim)  but the battery life was terrible. On the BB you can turn the phone transceiver off to save power.

Let me know how you go.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the info, I have downloaded and installed and after a litte modifying of the default path all is working.

I am quite impressed with the software especially as it is free.  I sent my son out on his bike this morning with my phone to test and all worked well.  Loaded the gpx data into pc and it provided the a complete map of where he went and duration etc.  He used the map to check that all was working as it should.

I am now trying t get my hands on some of the OS maps in a digital format to test when walking the hills. I have used the google map app which is on the forum but these do not hold the necessary detail.

Thanks for your help.

How did you load the .jad / .jar  via the website or DM manager ?

What needed modifying, as I'm about to do this myself in the near future. Also, what battery life are you getting with GPS on and phone off.

Drop me a direct email if you like, or post here.

I have a HTC "Kaiser" smartphone running memory map and it works very well.

I think Blackberry can run it too can't it?

'Blackberry Way, absolutely pouring down with rain, it's a terrible shame...'

Jeff Lynn, The Move, song Blackberry Way.

Is that an outdoors walk someplace, I suddenly now wonder, for the first time? It sure sounds as though it should be!

Nick,

I don't think that you can use the jar/jad files although I could be wrong. I found this link http://www.medicalnerds.com/how-to-install-offline-maps-on-your-blackberry-using-trekbuddy-0973/ that explained the installation easier then those on the trekbuddy website.

You need the alx / cod files for the installation I used the DM to do the installation.

As for battery life, i haven't really tested yet, ran it for a couple of hours todsy with no visible sign of battery loss, there is the option to turn the backlight off which I used.
