Silva aftersales service usually really rather good, so maybe if no luck with your retailer, email Silva to ask their advice. They will very likely exchange it for a new one for you as they did with my TDCL model a few years back ago - pretty much a similar problem there too.

I teach navigation skills and one of the tricks, purely for demonstration purposes, I play is to get the novice navigator to lean on a metal gate and to work out a bearing from the map and then locate the feature using the compass. It drives home the point that ferrous metals must be avoided!
