Silva aftersales service usually really rather good, so maybe if no luck with your retailer, email Silva to ask their advice. They will very likely exchange it for a new one for you as they did with my TDCL model a few years back ago - pretty much a similar problem there too.

I teach navigation skills and one of the tricks, purely for demonstration purposes, I play is to get the novice navigator to lean on a metal gate and to work out a bearing from the map and then locate the feature using the compass. It drives home the point that ferrous metals must be avoided!

Also worth taking the time to work out your Individual Compass Error (ICE).

The Black Cullin are worth avoiding if you want an accurate bearing, and cornwall, and the spot  about 1000feet above the Brotherwater inn.
