Hi,

 I am going to Ribblsedale with school and decided i would buy some new camping stuff before i go, as all of mine is the cheap and tacky.

I am quite tall and still have some growing left so i would probably need a sleeping bag designed for 198 cm+ as i will probably be 195 - 193 cm by the time i have stopped growing. I am looking for something that will last be a long time. I will not need a 4 season sleeping bag as i sleep very hot and won't be camping in winter and probably not in autumn, although i would get 2-3 season just incase i do. I could do something that packs pretty small and light. And the important bit my budget is 50£ (ideal)- £70 max (and if its really worth it i'll pay a little bit extra).

 So basically i need this:

Big

Cold

Small when rolled

Light

Min 2 season

No more than £70 and a bit quid.

 I'll be happy to answer any questions... I have been looking for a sleeping bag that fits my criteria and there seem to be a million billion sleeping bags on the market so need some help.

both good choices there, if on a budget.i have had the snugpack and its a long bag and warm too.

Sorry, i think i might have given the wrong impression out.. when i said i sleep warm i mean i get really hot, it takes me ages to get to sleep when i'm hot so i like to be cold thats why my room at home has the windows open 247 and hasn't had the radiator on once since i moved into the room.

cold sleeping bag not one made for 0 degrees or below ( probably made for 15-5 ish)

Also, whats the difference between a down bag and synthetic?

Down compresses more, is lighter for a given warmth and is supposedly more versatile ie more comfortable in a wider range of temps. Is measured by fill power (how much it fluffs up) abd the overall amount of down put in a bag, but these figures aren't always published.  You'll get an idea from the warmth, the overall weight off the bag, and how small the packed size is, which most retailers will tell you, and you'll certainly get from the manufaturers websties.

 Synthetic varies - the Mountain Hardwear Lamina ones are very lightweight so worth a look - but is heavier and less lofting than down, but is usually cheaper AND doesnt' get so comprimised by getting wet so can be a good option in UK conditions which can be wet and warm.  The pack size will be crucial as some synthetics are really bulky.

Vango make some inexpensive lightweight bags so also worth a look, down bags at this price will be harder to come by but try Cumulus and Alpkit as said before.  The fact you only want down to 5 degrees means you should have a few to choose from at your price range.

 Of my catalogues Field and Trek does a huge range of bags but the website isn't as good - perhaps someone knows of one which has a huge stock where its easy to compare? 

ok, thx for all the info. when i said min of 5 degress i ment i probably won't need it below 5 degrees and assumed that if it was then i would probably be to hot as i have said, i can't sleep well hot. Thx for the advice i'll have a look now, and i'm  still willing to hear from you gys.

I'm sure i read somewhere that synthetic bags lose up to 50% of their loft in 3 years. Down bags seem to live forever!  Down may actually work out cheaper in the long run.

Mike is correct, a well cared for down bag will last a long long time.
