Picked my Gamma headtorch up earlier in year. It replaced the Petzl Tikka Plus, which replaced the e-Lite, which replaced the Petzl Tikka. I like playing with the light combos. Green light make Hulk happy.

It looks a nice bit of kit but I really can't justify one as I have the Petzl Myo 5 (from long ago) which is superb for battery life and coverage and the e-lite for summer use.

Perhaps someone from Alpkit, passing through here, could tell us all what is happening with their headtorches. And if they will be redoing it, or restocking what they had before in the near future then?

I used the first model for a few years and couldn't find fault in it for £5. Wasn't good enough for night walking really but for general around-the-camp use it was great.

Now however I've upgraded to the new model and would agree that the old one is comparatively rubbish. It's a little heavier and bulkier than models from other manufacturers and the battery pack on the back is a bit annoying when most Petzls have them on the front, but light-wise it's almost as good as a Tikka XP. The slightly blue tint of the white LEDs shows that the components are much cheaper than in the Petzyl, but for ~£10, I think it should be a very attractive product when the nearest alternative will set you back about £35.

cant complain too much for the price its very good, on mine the button tends to get stuck and wont switch between functions at times which can be frustrating but usually comes good in the end

Trouble with me is that I just love headlamps....and have more than you can shake a stick at really. I could equip not only Aunt Sally on a walk but Worzel complete with all his different heads on too!I think sometimes I need to have more of my 'Thinking head' on when buying kit! After all I only have one head..at the end of the day. I'm the Imelda blinkin' Marcos of headlamps it seems to me now! Four Petzl ones - including my two old Zooms, two Tchibo ones, two different Energizer model ones...2 other cheapo ones - one is Hi-Gear. I did manage to stop myself buying the Alpkit one though, and the wind-up variety thankfully! They do all get used a bit though as I loan them out to friends/other walkers I know for night walks etc.

I've got one of each, well actually 2 of the original and 1 of the new. Couldn't fault the £5 version as it did what it said on the tin. It was bright enough for me around camp and I don't tend to walk in the dark except to the pub so it worked for me.

Agree that the Gamma is the Mutt's too. I too like the green side!
