I have been scouring the internet for a one person tent that isn't going to break the bank but still ways less than 2kg. The Blacks Ocatane 1 seems good, quite long and high, and about the closest thing I could find that resembles the celebrated Coleman Viper (which has received good reviews here and on other sites). However, I haven't been able to find any reviews of the tent or consumer comments on it. Has anyone used it? How does it fare in comparrison with other tents of the same price range. I am also considering the Vango Ultralite 100 (or even the 200, I am 6'2" and need some space), the Wild Country Sololite, or the Ferrino Lightent. Mountain Hardwares Sprite 1 seems good too. Alternately I wanted to buy the Gelert Solo until I could afford a more expensive tent. Doesn anyone know of a stockist in the london area? Thanks very much for your help and opininons Peter

nearly bought one a few weeks ago, looked an ok tent. im sure you could google some reviews..

 |
It got a review in TGO this month along with a few other lightweight solo tents

The wild country sololite got a TGO reccomended in the same test if I remember correctly

The Sprite 1 might be a bit short for you - also cool as the fly doesnt reach the ground and the inner is mainly mesh. No condensation though and i found warm enough for 3 seasons. I havent used the others.

I can't find that review on TGO. do you have a URL for it. Google searches turn up only onw review which is quite uninformative.i.e gives it a bad score (3 of 5) but then doesn't proceed to say why thanks for your advice. I did come across a scathing review of single skin tents which helped clarify my decision. There is some urgency as I leave tommorow! Cheers Peter

CT's comments on the Octane 1 ended along the lines of it being easy to pitch & stable once up, but that pegging points were adjusted by buckles & that these can shift in strong winds. The latter was the only real problem he found with it. In practice there might be some workaround possible with the buckles so they don't slip.

You may still be able to get a Viper. Try silvermans.co.uk

It would be really interesting to hear from someone who's bought an Octane 1. The pack size is relatively small, and although not the lightest on the market, at 1.75kg it should be light enough for most. £120 would be an excellent price if it performs well.

Well I bought the Octane 1 in an emergency, the morning that I left for two weeks of camping in Italy. The good news is I felt that it performed very well. I have had no experience with other solo tents. The Tent packs away very small and is one of the lightest that you can find in that price range at 1.75kg . I found it suprisingly roomy, it was big enough for me and my girlfriend to squeeze into. The height meant that I could sit comfortably in the doorway and enjoy the view of olive groves in Florence. There was a small porch, where the pack sat comfortably during the night, and I used the spare guy rope included to tie the door flap to a nearby tree to create a veranda (a very humble one). Was subjected to thunder storm in venice and the only moisture we felt in the tent was from water splashing through the small gap between the fly and the sandy ground. I met a cycle tourist who had the Big Agnes seedhouse, and I felt that the Octace compared well (despite being cheaper!) for having more storage space, for being able to sit up in it by the doorway, and in the simplicity of design, a single pole and fly first pitch. The only thing that I am not so keen on is the colour, which could be a little conspicuous if you wanted to sneaky camp anywhere, or not spoil the landscape with a bright red little dome. The Buckles for tightening were useful and didn't slip in the wind(though it wasn't very strong) and I am sure these could be secured using the pegs. Like I have mentioned, I don't know much about other tents, but the Blacks Octane 1 served me very well, and will continue to be an important part of my kit.

I've got a Vango TBS Micro 100 for sale if you're interested. Very lightly used and is a similar design to your Black's one. I'm selling it as I'm just not using it enough to justify having it in the cupboard. In fact I only ever used it once and can report it stood up fine on a balmy night in Buckinghamshire!! Seriously, it is a well regarded tent as you'll see if you do a quick google search. You can send me a message if you'd be interested.

Oh, sorry, I'm also about 6' 2" and fitted in the Vango fine.
