Hi can anyone reccomend a shop in either Windermere or Ambleside ( Or maybee even Kendal ) that stocks a good range of rucksacks please? I have a real deep rooted hatred of trudging round shops as you usually end up back at the first one, so I need somewhere I can try a lot of bags ( its the first large sack Ive ever bought! ). Thanks!

You could try Gaynor Sports in Ambleside, i have not been in there myself as i don't live any where near it and have not been to the lakes since i was kiddie on holiday. However i have ordered a few things from them on line and have found them to be very efficient and very helpful with any questions i have had.

You could get a custom made one. Will last a lifetime. In Staveley, near Kendal. Aiguille alpine Herb

Danny, trudging around is worth it for a pack, try on different makes with the sort of weight you will caring. If you get the one that's the best of 3 available in a given shop it still may not fit and will grind you into the dirt in no time. If the aren't willing to weight a few sacks for trying then walk away. Gaynors has a good selection, climbers shop also Ambleside is an excellent shop but not sure if they do large sacks. In my view if you can make it to Keswick, Needle sports has a good variety of top notch large sacks.

Thanks for the replies so far, I have had a look at the websites of all the places mentioned! The climbers-shop seems the broadest range so far, unfortunately the only suitable pack in Needle Sports in my price range is the OMM Villain, but that is also stocked at the climbers shop. Gaynors sport have got some good prices!

If you're after something lightweight and really keen on the one-stop approach, then Outdoor Warehouse in Windermere is well worth a visit. They have a website too so you can check what models are there to look at first. In Ambleside I'd start with The Climbers Shop, but you have so many within such a short distance that it really would be worth at least a quick look around - Cunninghams, Lakeland Climber / Lakeland Runner, and Mountain Factor are worth a look, not to mention the presence of Gaynors, and Blacks (I doubt if F&T's rebuilt after the fire yet?). One or two other little ones kicking around there too. There's not much in Kendal afaik since Kentdale Rambler closed (shame).

For Keswick I'd also have said Needlesports, but imo George Fisher and Ultimate Outdoors are the next best. And Winwood is there too if you were interested in the really lightweight end of things.

Hi danny, Climbers shop has a good range of sacks and the staff are very helpful in there to so will give you lots of advice and make sure u get the right fitting sack. otherwise in ambleside there is lakeland climber again good staff and advice, not sure on range of sacks though. Cunnighams is good too, have quite a good selection and good deals sometimes quite close to the climbers shop as well so not too much further to go between the two. As matt says the outdoor warehouse is good in w'mere, well worth a try if on your way

Yep, the Climbers Shop are your best bet for rucksacks. They also do free delivery on their website if you really can't face shopping. www.climbers-shop.com From experience the guys in there are all active in the outdoors and really know their stuff.
