i use paramo fuera trousers. far more weather resistant than the montane. comfy to wear against the skin. in all other respects just like good waterproofs - side zips, pockets, fly.

in summer they are just the ticket as they dry and vent extremely well. in winter - no. but that's my personal choice.

I used to use Needlesports Pertex trousers as overtrousers for cycling, over shorts - cutting out the wind and the direct force of the rain was very effective, and more comfortable than any overtrousers.... until I discovered OMM Kamleikas

I'd do the same for walking, adding windproof trousers over shorts (just got some very good Haglofs ones, much nicer than the Montanes), but I wouldn't try to keep a normal pair of walking trousers dry under them, not much point in that as I see it, so I'd still carry 'proper' overtrousers in that situation.
