cooking in an Akto

Have just bought an Akto tent and am very pleased with it. My previous experience has been with a 2-person tent that allowed the door to be pegged to one side to provide a windbreak andshelter from rain when cooking. I wondered if anyone had experience of adding a loop to the bottom of their Akto door so that it too could be pegged to one side. This would give more protection when cooking in the the vestibule area in rain.

not sure as the door wouldn't stretch so as to be pegged anywhere other than where it meets the fly at the ground (hope that makes sense). However, maybe adding an elasticated (using shock cord) pegging point of maybe 8" to 10" would enable it to be pegged out at an angle required (imagine, like a mini-tarp)?

There is room in the Akto porch for careful cooking with the door closed. I know this is a bit risky, but I accept the risk, it makes life a lot easier. My cooking is usually restricted to boiling water in any case. I always keep a sharp knife to hand, and if things ever got out of hand I'd be making a second door on the opposite side of the tent very quickly. When  cooking in the porch I always make sure there is plenty of fresh air coming into the tent.

My home-made esbit/caldera stove is "very safe" for indoor cooking

I've cooked in a Akto plenty of times with no problems. I prefer to have the porch pegged down rather than have the risk of something flapping into the Jetboil and knocking it over. I keep the upper zips very open to provide as much ventilation as possible. I also attached a guy to the webbing tab on the porch hood so you can ensure that the hood is pulled out as much as possible for greatest ventilation. Why don't Hilleberg attach a guy here as they already stitch in the webbing tab? You could always take it off if you wanted to save the huge weight gain.

We've opened the door outwards and upwards of a Laser competition using a trekking pole , a tent peg and and a spare lace, to  form a sort of raised porch. Should be possible with the Akto too?

No problem cooking inside the porch in the akto if you are carefull.  I have a loop added to the bottom of the door as you sugested and it is only really usefull when you want extra ventilation without opening the door completely.
no need to mod your Akto, as long as you are not careless it's perfectly safe to cook in the porch (with a gas stove anyways). Really nice when it's chucking it down inside and you are all warm and cosy with the dinner on!

Sounds cool. Any piccies available?

Akto's are well known for being very flammable and dangerous to cook in.

Sorry G reat!

I was about to say the exact same thing as shuttleworth, Ive done it with my Laser Comp a few times. BTW I cook in my tent with the doors closed often and havent had any probs. The Laser Comp porch is smaller than the Akto I think, I' am very carefull and I accept the risk. I'm pretty sure you should be able to unclip the inner and pull it back a bit to give you even more room aswell, maybe an Akto owner will confirm this?

yes, that is possible though rarely necessary as the Akto porch is very generous.
