Anyone got any experience of the Jack Wolfskin Termite 1? (or 2 for that matter)
I'm looking for something similar in size/weight/layout to the Phoenix Phreeranger EB. I had a Phreeranger until recently but decided to sell it as it hadn't been used in a long time. Less than a year after selling it I now need a solo tent again.
Pity they (or Vango) don't still make them, wonder what the weight would be using current technology.
Most of the Phoenix tents were pretty damned fantastic really compared to a lot of other makes. I do not understand why someone cannot go 'retro' on tent designs today, as some companies go on shoes or training shoes and sports bags too for instance. Especially with modern fabrics etc in place of the old! Man, that would be fine!
dead right about the Phreeranger, it was way ahead of it's time. I was looking at a 1990 Phoenix catalogue and the Phoenix build in general was fantastic. The Phreeranger had really thin guylines when everything else used stuff like bootlaces. The pegs supplied were all toughened aluminium channel (I swapped the pegs when I sold my Phreeranger and kept the Phoenix ones), It came with a storage Stuff Sack plus 2 individual stuff Sacks for packing, the Poles were 'Bulldog' and the list goes on. Mind you it cost about £200 almost 20 years ago!!
I'm sure they could get the weight down to around 1750g if they made it now. I don't understand why no one takes up the design either, of course if I hadn't been a total idiot and sold mine I wouldn't care
Regarding the Termite mentioned in Outdoors Magic it seems like it's a different design to the current model as it implies that the poles are external and that it pitches inner and fly together, the Termite 1 & 2 appear to be 'inner first' with the fly covering the poles. I saw the Termite 2 in the Cotswold sale, thats what got me thinking, ok it's 2 person and over 2kg but when it boils down to it the Phreeranger was over (just) 2kg. I was happy to carry it given the space.
I know mate, as I still have that great Phonix tent catalogue myself too!Mine's the Phreespirit Suphalite there, in green of course! A bit heavy now for a two man really, more of a two man with added space; as it was really actually meant for three people camping out. Great for car camping though, and especially good for wild camping trips, for times when there's someone else to help carry part of the tent too!
