Hi, i am wanting to replace my old gore-tex jacket, i am confused because since i bough my jacket event has come on the market. I do hill walking in north wales, the lakes and hopefully canadian next summer, should i go for gore-tex or event? which is the better fabric? and the advantages and disadvantages? so i can make an informed descion.

Kay, i am a gore-tex fan but then i don't need the claimed extra breathability of event as i don't run to warm and if i do i just open up some zips a bit. However, be prepared for many OM'ers giving you there veiws on the different types of material and favoured jackets.

I'd say that eVent has a significant edge in terms of breathability, however if you're not someone who runs hot, that may not be an issue for you. And using vents/ simply rolling up your sleeves can sometimes make enough of a difference anyway.

The latest Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabrics are lighter than before and use a woven backer, which is very hard wearing, but also slides very easily over lower layers making them feel very non-restrictive in use.

There are excellent jackets available in both fabrics. I'd definitely give eVent the edge if you tend to overheat though.

.....or Paramo/Furtech or PP.

I suppose the questions you need to ask yourself are how did your last gore tex jacket perform? and do you run hot?

If you do run hot then look at the event jackets that are around, if not then i would look at the different gore tex options especialy if it worked for you last time......

Sorry, not much help i know but like most things it is different strokes for different folks

I am of the opinion that the fabric choice is often less of an issue than things like fit, how well you find the hood works for you, are the pockets the right size for what you want in them and in the right places, do the drawcords get caugfht in the wind and whip your face, is there a seam along the top of the yoke to rub under a rucksack, are the arms the right length etc. etc.  In other words, the devil is in the detail.

If, however, you find that all else really is equal between a Brand X in eVent or a Brand Y in Goretex, note Jon's comments above.

I decided to try eVent when I replaced my gore-tex paclite shell.

It was a choice between the Rab Latok and Montane Superfly - both are a really good women's fit (for me).  I found a Latok bargain on ebay so that swung it.

I find it much more comfortable than gore-tex.

I've had various Gore jackets over the years and some have seemed much more breathable than others, but I think that was largely down to design and fit. Not tried eVent yet, cos I've not yet been able to justify the expense of yet another waterproof, but I suspect the same would be true. So go for the one that you think feels best on -- and make sure it's got a decent wired hood.

Bought a event montane superfly jacket surposed to be one of the best, have had gortex xcr before .First used on a   light showery day .absolutly a revelation, breathability far better than gortex. One problem though ,in heavy rain no where near as waterproof. nobody ever seems to mention  this small point.

They are meant to be waterproof. If it isn't waterproof, why didn't you take it back to the shop?

I've had an e-vent jacket for years without any leaks.

Gore-tex Proshell for me.

"Guaranteed to keep you dry"

"guaranteed to keep you dry"

until all the condensation builds up inside

an eVent fan myself but it does need to be reproofed a lot more often...my jacket (an old montane air) wets out quite often but never leaks and is still breathable even when it has wetted out

Had my event jacket a couple of years (Montane Venture) and no issues whatsoever.  Note now as stated above that you need to look after it a bit more than was first thought and that includes washing with normal soap powders/liquids to help get rid of the bacteria etc.

This now comes in a neat label attached to all new event jackets.

"Guaranteed to keep you dry"

If you read the fine print of the "guarantee" you'll see it's based on the hydrostatic head of the Goretex fabric being sufficient to be declared waterproof by widely accepted standards.  So you could actually make just as legitimate a claim for, say, the stuff B&Q make their rubble sacks from, so it's not actually that brilliant a thing to be backing you up...

.wear your outer in the dry you get slightly damp.wear your outer in the rain you get damper. wear your outer in heavy rain  off to the drying room

The susceptibility of Event to dirt/grease/etc has put me off it permantently. Personally I believe it's a fundamental design flaw that ignores the real-life use of the garments.

I've used Neoprene-backed nylon (frequently ended up wetter inside than outside due to condensation!), Lowe TriplePoint Ceramic (performance fine, but garment was heavy) and Goretex XCR (performance fine, no problems with breathability although I am a "hot" kind of person).

Maybe problems that people have/think they will have, with e-vent, is down to time of year/under garments worn? I've never had any problems with e-vent, but maybe that is down to how i use it. In summer i carry a goretex paclite jacket for it's lack of weight. It is often worn over a t-shirt and is in contact with bare, sweaty skin.
My e-vent jacket is used in the colder months, when i'm sweating less, and i'm wearing long sleeves. Less chance for the e-vent to be contaminated with skin oils and grease?
Like i've said, i've been fine with e-vent.

I wonder how much of a problem it really is though... there's no shortage of folk who don't have any problems with it, and at the anecdotal (i.e., unreliable) level I've heard no shortage of folk complainung Goretex leaks like a sieve over the years.  I've also heard others moan that Paramo's untenable as you have to reproof it every half an hour, etc, etc.

I think the bottom line is that it is getting used in Serious Places by Serious People and they come back to it, rather than return their garments as "unfir for purpose sold" which they'd have a legal right to do if real-world use wasn't practical.

Too much hersay, not enough hard data.

Pete.
