Was all ready to order a laser comp then came across the ME ar2 ultralite.

I really like the look of the ar2 and i seems to offer a little more space than the comp which would be handy as i usually have one of my sons along with me when camping.

I would love to hear the comments of people who have experience of both these tents if you could take the time.

Thanks, twiggers.

They are very different beasts theTerra Nova Laser Competition is a more stable tent suitable for all conditions but the Mountain Equipment AR 2 needs to be pitched with great care and in a sheltered site as it is very difficult to keep the long side of the tent taunt .I think you should consider the Terra Nova Laser which is slightly larger and more suitable for two people or maybe something like a Vaude Taurus Ultralight if you are looking for a used tent as they often come up on ebay for around £80 they are very easy to put up 'as one' you just put the two poles in and its standing and then a few pegs in and thats it, all done.

edited to add this about two 6ft+ guys using a Photon

the Photon is the same size as a Competition it just used more costly fabrics

I've got both tents.

The AR is not a mountain tent and flaps furiously in a strong wind. It is a bit more roomy.  Here's my review: http://blogpackinglight.wordpress.com/2007/12/22/me-ultralite-2-review/

The Comp is a better all round tent, but needs a bit of practice to pitch.

Here's my first experience:  http://blogpackinglight.wordpress.com/2008/03/19/operator-incompetence/

I used it more successfully on my recent Lakes trip and have made some modifications: http://blogpackinglight.wordpress.com/2008/08/13/laser-comp-mods/

Hope that helps

I think i'm gonna go for the comp.

are you really sure the comp is the best tent for 2???? a standard laser is onlt 300g heavier and has sooooo much more room for 2

Lightwave t0trek is IMHO even better space, esp if you go for the xt version (more weight tho)

Just read it, in a photon werent they? Theres a pic here too: 2 up in a laser

but I think it would only be acceptable in rather xtreme circumstances e.g MM, or close couple on a mental effort to save weight..

No its not for me either, but its interesting that they recken that the taller person should be on the inside with the shorter one by the door

I will mostly be using the tent as a one man but occasionally i'll be taking one of my sons along with me. The oldest is only eleven and slightly built like me.

I also have my gelert solo that i shaved down to 1150 grams by replacing the poles and pegs for aluminium one, so when they're a little older they can use that.

main thing for me is the weight, i'm 9 stone wet through so multi day treks with a fully loaded pack can be a  bit of a problem so im looking to replace some of my heavier items.

I usually use my T2 ultralite pro at 2kg which imho is an excellent tent and only cost me 49.99 but the comp will allow me an immediate weight saving of 1kg.

I can't think of any area i can save that much weight elsewhere despite the cost.

The 790g Terra nova Photon (the same size as a competition) is on sale at Field and Trek for £225 instead of £300.

Has any one here ever used one? is it made of tissue paper as some say? I would be interested in anyones experiences of this tent
