The cheap (US)A plasy one's work fine.....but an equal is the well-deployed walking pole hole digger....

....discretion is also handy.......as are 'mixing' and 'spreading'....but you need to go WELL off-route for such delights..

The ipood strikes me as a load of..

The cheap (US)A plasy one's

don't work for me

And even a u-dig-it is lighter than a trekking pole!

You can find u-dig-it clones on E-Bay for about £6-7 inc P+P. Just search for trowels in the Sporting Goods section.

This was an impulse purchase when visiting Xscape.

Like you Matt I found this fairly naff at actually doing any digging.  It's much lighter than another impulse purchase from the USA the U-dig it but nearly twice the weight of my Coghlan's trowel.

Any engineering types know if the alloy the ipood is made off will take kindly to being run past a grinder to give it a more aggresive shape?

Pity, if you had used my link on the bargain thread the other day then you'd have got one for half price, that they're going for now from PFM!

I've had this a while unfortunately.  I haven't checked out that thread because I don't actually need any kit - I'm pretty good but sometimes when the boredom sets in I find myself drifting into a gear shop.  Normally I'm just browsing but on this occassion succumbed to gadgetitus.  If I grind the blade down & drill holes in the blade & handle I may get the weight down & still have a strong trowel!

Let us all know how you get on then, won't you!In cutting it down might I suggest you think along the lines of an Australian aboriginals digging stick maybe. Leave the business digging end untouched but shave off the sides a bit maybe leaving you a long thin profiled digger.

I've ground it down & the trowel now has quite an aggresive point on it. I may take it down some more yet. I sharpened the edge up so it cuts better as well. I still need to drill some holes. Once I'm done I will weigh it & post a photo.

Trevor you asked about toilet paper - I just take some of the stuff from home (Aldi 's cheapest) & burn it after use. If it's bone dry with fire risk I pack it out in a ziplock bag (one of the decent US ones)

Hey, that was another thread on here before, where I asked about toilet paper for the outdoors on there, wasn't it? Well remembered!

No - I just stock up on normal ziplocks (TM) from the USA when I go over - they are far better than anything we have here as standard.   Much cheaper than aloksaks.   They are not as heavy duty as aloksaks but they are good enough for me & if I need extra security I just double-bag.

Here's the ipood-lite.

I didn't weigh it before but it's supposed to be 150g.  This modified version seems more than strong enough & weighs 84g.  I've also removed the plastic end cap & bent up the tabs to prevent the handle slipping through when collapsed.  As well as making it more pointed I've sharpened the edges.  Thats still 30g more than my plastic Coghlans trowel but a lot tougher.

What's the difference between an ipod and an ipood?

Well, Apple didn't like that extra o and have sued, so its now to be called a rocket trowel

We bought the S2S ipood in Australia a couple of years ago, goes everywhere with us (within reason!!). Does the job fine, the hollow handle is for putting a roll of paper inside, and the cap keps it in. We refer to it as "Primed" for use .

Happy with it, fairly sturdy as it comes, so copes ok with some hardish ground, there are limits naturally.

We wouldn't travel without it.  Moley.
