Just as a general comment on head torches, this morning I bought - as a present for someone - an Energizer "Headlight LEDx3". Cost a tenner. Claims a distance of "> 65m". Weighs 77g with batteries. Petzl claim a distance of 27m for a Tikka & 35m for a Tikka XP. A Myo XP gets 72m. Comparing the Energizer against a Tikka Plus (32m) in a large cupboard, the Energiser does seem a lot brighter. (Don't think I've used the Tikka much since I last changed the batteries.)

Further to my post above, Argos are selling a head torch which seems pretty much identical to the Energizer but at £3.99. Only comes in a plain box - no fancy plastic wrapper thingie. Seems just a bright as the Energizer. Not sure how water resistant it will be. Catalogue number is 340/0834

I use a 30g Cyba Lite Sprint for my main head torch these days, I've come off hills with it and its teeny tiny yet sends out a cracking beam good enough for simple use and simple hill walking when caugth out late in the evenings. 30g is so light for something like that. My only problem with the E+Lite is that I wouldn't stash it without being in its case as its a bit fragile, and with case it weighs almost the same as a normal Petzl Tikka or so. The Photon Freedom LED kering things are amazing, I always have one on me 24hrs as its on my keyring all the time, but I will say that after an hour or two the beam does start to darken, unlike things like the E=Lite which keep a fairly constant powered beam after a few hours still. Having said that though the batteries for an E+Lite or a Cybe Lite Sprint are those tiny little watch type batteries ( cheap on Ebay ) and you can take loads of spares, I take spares in one of those old types of contact lense cases as they fit perfect in one of those and the batteries and the case weigh nothing. The Photon LED keyring things are a bit of a ball ache to change batteries in compared to a Sprint. Have a look at the Cybe Lite Sprint though, its a great head torch! P.S. Its only a tenner aswell!

The new Photon Freedom micro's are easy to change Jamie. I think it was the older models that were a pain. You can have a focused beam in their 'covert nose' models.

Are there newer ones without the four tiny screws?

Are there newer ones without the four tiny screws? The newer ones just 'flick' off. They are much brighter too. Details here. Scroll down for battery replacement info.

Ooh I hadn't seen them, don't know wether to be happy that there is anew version or disappointed that I haven't got one yet! Like the lanyard too, usually have mine on keyring so stops me having to jangle those ruddy things round with me. Hmm me thinks me may have to invest.

Is the Photon Freedom affected by water?
|
 |
Water resistant only according to the link above.

shuttleworth--------swam in the sea with one on chain round my neck----it died----- washed it in fresh water---added new battery---it sprang back to life----fell in ditch saturday night and it kept shining under water----retrieved it and shone my self home------it was a very good wedding but perhaps that extra drink for the frog was a bit too ambitious

Cheers, some of these little torches seem to have no seal at all, though that being said water ingress doesn't always seem to stop things working. Good to know they can be brought back to life.

I've bought fire-steels from this site. They have loads of torches as well. No idea on the torches quality. Free shipping to anywhere in the world. My firesteels arrived within the week and work perfectly. I've no idea how they can make a profit on the cheaper stuff. The postage costs more!

Apologies for raising this zombie from the dead. Just an update on the Photon Freedom. I changed the batteries for the first time yesterday. No problem, went to use it this morning and it's dead. Aha I thought rubbish batteries, but no it's dead. Having looked on the interweb it's a problem (mainly in the US of A?) with this torch apparently not massively common but it does occur. So be warned if you're using this as your primary torch spare batteries may not be enough if it can't cope with a simple battery changes. I'm going to get a another pretzal E+ lite or whatever they're called.
