Exped Downmat
How do you blow up yours?

I'm a huge fan of the Exped Downmat.  It's not much heavier than a Thermarest and is much, much more comfortable.

The only drawback that it has is the 'need' to inflate it with a pumpsack.

Firstly, the pumpsack is pretty weighty - c130g.  True, you can use it as a pillow case but chances are that you have a much lighter stuff sack that can perform exactly the same function.

Secondly, inflating the mat with the pumpsack is fiddly.  It's a nightmare in the rain, kneeling on the wet ground, rain pouring down your back as you compress and re-inflate the pumpsack.  Then you have the Herculean task of getting the pumpsack nozzle off the valve.  I'm prepared to put up with this because the downmat is is so fantastically comfortable.

However, this guy http://v-g.me.uk/WildCamp/WildCampMatt.htm blows his up by mouth, thus eliminating the above drawbacks.  Anyone else do the same?  I know the mat contains down that suffers when damp but we all own down sleeping bags that get damp when out in the field.  We just dry them out back at home.  Provided you inflate the mat with dry air using the pumpsack after every trip, the down should be OK.

Thoughts, anyone?

I don't. I think the down will stay damp that way. The latest pump sacks do not have the valve connected direct to the pump sack but have it attached by a flat tube. This means you can orient yourself any way with respect to the mat while you inflate it. You ought to be able to get under shelter while you pump the mat up although I do not know how minimal your shelter is.

I cut all the foam and inner out of the pump sack. I find I can reinflate the pump sack just as well without and it saves about 30 gram

No matter what air you use, the mat gets full of condensation so just blow it up. The demonstartion model is clear plastic...
Next year there's no nozzles at all and all the mats have the terrible intergral foam pump-a-tron to inflate them.

The 'terrible' pump-a-tron works really well with my SinMat

It annoys the hell out of me in mine, I think it adds about a third to the pack size.
I've been trying to get it out in pieces with a screwdriver

It'll go down on you if you do that...

I think that's something else inflatable that you're thinking of there, ed...
