Akto spare pole thingy

Not sure if I'm the 'proud' owner of my new Akto yet, seems a bit of a shapeless mass! What's the spare pole thingy for?! Has a silver sleeve (sellotaped at one end). And one of the black upright struts is missing (have to ask Hilleberg for a new one I guess).

I can't help thinking it's just like our Jack Wolfskin Last Resort 1, similar material (paid 100 Pounds for the Last Resort, 190 for the Akto).

Putting it up in the garden tomorrow and gonna sleep in it, to see what all the fuss is about Aktos. Methinks my Phoenix Phantom is a more stylish tent! (OK, I know, I have to weigh this Akto first... Phantom weighs 2.40kg....Last Resort weighs 1.60kg).

Is it a new Akto or second hand?

Ah right. That "spare pole thingy" looks a a field repair on a broken section of pole. Also explains the missing strut.

The "spare pole thingy" is for use in emergency if you break a pole. Slide it over the broken pole to get you through the night.

Wot Dave Sez... standard on (I think) all models of Hilleberg.  So you can save a little weight by leaving it at home if you want to raise the chances of tripping over a guy and falling onto the hoop and busting a pole...

Pete.

So you get a spare pole section and a pole repair sleeve?

Ooo, fancy!

reason why not buy anything of e-bay...

The spare pole thing is a spare pole section plus repair sleeve, as supplied.

Using the spare pole section means unthreading/rethreading the elastic. To use the repair sleeve, bend the dead pole section as straight as you can and reinforce the bent bit with the sleeve. It's a bit loose to allow for deformation at the site of the damage.

You won't be able to pitch the tent properly with a missing corner strut, or at least a reasonable substitute.
